Sourcing steel sheet piling from China
Steel sheet piling from China, including hot-rolled and cold-formed U and Z piles, and welded angles, shapes and sections of iron or steel, pays 0% UK duty, with no anti-dumping duty and no steel safeguard measure. Piles are bought on section, grade, length and interlock fit, to BS EN 10248 or BS EN 10249 with mill certificates.
Hot-rolled and cold-formed steel sheet piles and welded sections from China pay 0% UK duty, with no steel measure. BS EN 10248, 10249 and checks.

0% duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 27 September 2026, sheet piling of iron or steel, whether or not drilled, punched or made from assembled elements, and welded angles, shapes and sections, heading 7301, carried 0% on goods from China on both lines. Neither line carried an anti-dumping measure or the steel safeguard measure.
Hot-rolled angles, shapes and sections that are not welded are under headings 7216 and 7228, and piling rigs are covered in our piling rigs guide, so confirm the commodity code.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sheet piling (hot-rolled or cold-formed, drilled, punched or assembled) | 7301 10 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Welded angles, shapes and sections | 7301 20 00 00 | 0% | None |
Standards and certificates
Hot-rolled sheet piling of non-alloy steels is specified to BS EN 10248, and cold-formed sheet piling to BS EN 10249, covering steel grades, section tolerances and interlock dimensions. Ask for an EN 10204 type 3.1 inspection certificate for each heat, and for the section properties and design data the engineer will use.
Specifying sheet piles
Specify section profile and properties, steel grade, length and tolerance, interlock type, any coating or painting, corner and junction piles, handling holes, and bundling and marking by length and grade.
Worked duty example
Suppose, purely for illustration, you import 400 tonnes of hot-rolled U-section sheet piles under 7301 10 00 00. At £280,000 free on board and £26,000 to ship and insure, the customs value is £306,000. With 0% duty on sheet piles, the only charge is import VAT: 20% of £306,000, or £61,200. VAT-registered businesses usually recover that in their next return. The method is set out in how UK import duty and VAT work.
Inspection checklist
Dimensions: measure width, height, thickness and straightness on sample piles, and test interlocks by threading two piles together.
Material: check the mill certificate for grade, chemistry and mechanical properties against the order, and heat numbers against pile markings.
Loading: check piles are bundled and blocked to avoid bending, and that interlocks are protected from damage in handling.
What goes wrong
Sheet pile orders fail on straightness, interlocks and paperwork. Piles bow or twist so they will not drive in line, interlocks are damaged or out of tolerance and bind, a lower grade is supplied, and certificates do not match the heat numbers.
Thread-test samples, check straightness, and match certificates to piles. See our quality inspection guide.
Cambridge China Bridge sources sheet piling for UK civil engineering contractors, checking the mill's rolling and test records first. See factory verification.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on steel sheet piling from China?
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 27 September 2026, sheet piling (7301 10 00 00) carried 0% from China, with no anti-dumping or steel measure.
Which standards cover sheet piles?
BS EN 10248 for hot-rolled and BS EN 10249 for cold-formed sheet piling.
How do I check interlocks?
Thread two sample piles together and measure interlock dimensions against the standard.
Are hot-rolled sections the same heading?
No. Non-welded angles and sections are under headings 7216 and 7228.
