UK duty on U-section steel sheet piles

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, U-section steel sheet piles fall within the sheet-piling line 7301 10 00 00, including drilled, punched or assembled piles. Heading 7301 also covers welded angles, shapes and sections, which are separate from this guide's product family. The table shows variants sharing the sheet-piling code.

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure, suspension or attached import control. Import VAT is normally 20%. Confirm with HMRC or your customs broker whether the sheet piling falls within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism from 1 January 2027. Ask the mill for emissions information and review our UK carbon border adjustment guide.

Confirm the product description and commodity code before shipment. For related profiles and the wider heading, see our Z-section steel sheet piles guide.

Specify the U profile and interlock

Give the mill the engineer's approved section drawing, section properties, steel grade, length and tolerances. State hot-rolled or cold-formed manufacture, interlock geometry, coating, handling holes and any corner or junction pieces. Agree whether piles are supplied individually or assembled, with bundle identification by grade and length.

For non-alloy steel sheet piling, specify BS EN 10248 for hot-rolled piles or BS EN 10249 for cold-formed piles. Request an EN 10204 type 3.1 inspection certificate for each heat, plus the section data needed by the engineer. Check compatibility with existing piles using physical interlock samples.

For supply in Great Britain, confirm the applicable construction-product conformity route and request the relevant declaration of performance and marking documentation. CE marking remains recognised for construction products in Great Britain. Agree the documentation before ordering alongside the dimensional and material acceptance criteria.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 tonnes of hot-rolled U-section steel sheet piles under 7301 10 00 00, invoiced at £32,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £36,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £36,000, so it is £7,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Profile: measure section width, depth, thickness, length, bow and twist against the approved drawing and agreed tolerances.

Interlocks: thread sample piles together and check for binding, crushed ends, burrs and damage from handling.

Material: match pile markings and heat numbers to mill certificates, then compare grade, chemistry and mechanical properties with the order.

Arrival: check bundle identification, quantities, coating condition and transport damage before releasing piles for use. Record findings using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A similar-looking U profile can have different thicknesses or section properties. Bowed or twisted piles drive out of line, while incompatible or damaged interlocks bind during installation. Certificates may describe the ordered grade without matching the heat numbers on the delivered piles.

Approve the drawing and interlock sample before production, inspect the actual shipment and keep certificates linked to bundle records. Ask for protected interlocks and suitable blocking during transport. Use factory verification to check the mill's rolling and testing capability.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on U-section steel sheet piles from China?

The supplied tariff record, read on 1 October 2026, shows 0% for 7301 10 00 00, with no listed trade remedy or steel measure. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Which standard should I specify for U-section sheet piles?

Specify BS EN 10248 for hot-rolled non-alloy steel sheet piling or BS EN 10249 for cold-formed piling, alongside the engineer's approved profile, grade and tolerances.

Will Chinese U-section piles fit my existing sheet piles?

Confirm interlock geometry and thread physical samples together before ordering. A matching profile description alone does not establish interlock compatibility.

What mill certificate should I ask for?

Request an EN 10204 type 3.1 inspection certificate for each heat. Match its heat number, grade and test results to the markings on the supplied piles.
