Sourcing steel dragline ropes from China
Steel dragline ropes from China pay 0% ordinary UK duty; the selected steel-rope lines also carry 60.40% anti-dumping duty. Specify the rope for its drag or hoist duty, and check machinery supply requirements where it is intended for lifting. Cambridge China Bridge sources steel dragline ropes.

0% ordinary duty plus 60.40% anti-dumping
Heading 7312 covers iron or steel stranded wire, ropes, cables, plaited bands, slings and similar goods without electrical insulation. Steel dragline ropes sit within its rope and cable branches. The table selects steel-rope lines for direct shipments from China; diameter and coating determine the branch. Confirm the commodity code against the actual rope specification. See the wider wire rope and cables guide for other products in this heading.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, ordinary duty is 0% across the selected lines, with an additional residual anti-dumping duty of 60.40% on Chinese steel rope. The supplied tariff snapshot lists no countervailing duty, suspension or steel trade measure on these lines. Include anti-dumping in the landed-cost calculation before approving the order.
The tariff attaches import and export waste controls to 7312 10 98 19. Waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste. For a shipment from China, ask your customs broker to confirm the requirement for the actual goods and route, particularly if buying used or discarded rope. For imports into England requiring notification, the exporter must apply to the dispatch country's competent authority for consent.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uncoated or zinc-coated steel rope, over 12 mm up to 24 mm | 7312 10 83 19 | 0% | 60.40% residual anti-dumping |
| Uncoated or zinc-coated steel rope, over 24 mm up to 48 mm | 7312 10 85 19 | 0% | 60.40% residual anti-dumping |
| Uncoated or zinc-coated steel rope, over 48 mm | 7312 10 89 19 | 0% | 60.40% residual anti-dumping |
| Other-coated steel rope, over 3 mm | 7312 10 98 19 | 0% | 60.40% residual anti-dumping |
Specify the dragline rope by operating duty
Identify the machine and whether the rope serves the drag, hoist or another function. Obtain the machine manufacturer's rope specification before requesting quotations. State diameter, finished length, strand construction, wire tensile grade, core, lay direction, minimum breaking force, lubrication and coating. Include termination drawings and the drum and sheave details. Require written approval before the factory changes construction, core or lubricant.
For rope intended for lifting, confirm with the relevant machinery safety authority whether machinery supply rules apply and which conformity and minimum-breaking-force documents are required. Ask for a declaration of conformity and a certificate stating minimum breaking force where applicable. Keep these separate from your purchasing checks on machine compatibility. Ask the supplier to identify which reels its certificates and break-test reports cover.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10 tonnes of replacement steel dragline rope under 7312 10 85 19, invoiced at £22,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £24,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £24,000, so it is £4,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match reel references, rope construction, core and lay direction to the order and certificates before shipment and again on arrival.
Dimensions: measure diameter and verify supplied length and termination dimensions against the approved machine specification.
Breaking force: arrange a break test on a sample from each reel and match the results to the declared minimum breaking force. Agree sampling and acceptance with your quality inspection provider.
Condition: check for broken wires, kinks, flattened sections, corrosion, uneven lubrication and damaged terminations. Inspect reel flanges and packing for transport damage.

What goes wrong
A quotation described only as dragline rope leaves construction, core and lay open to substitution. A rope can match the ordered diameter while differing from the machine specification. Lower wire tensile grade can reduce breaking force, and a different construction can change flexibility and fatigue life. Resolve substitutions before production rather than relying on a generic certificate.
Poor lubrication and damaged packing can leave rope corroded or distorted on arrival. Photograph suspect sections and retain reel identity before unwinding. Another purchasing error is budgeting only for ordinary duty: the selected Chinese steel-rope lines also carry anti-dumping duty.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on steel dragline ropes from China?
The selected steel-rope lines carry 0% ordinary duty plus 60.40% residual anti-dumping duty in the tariff snapshot read on 1 October 2026. Confirm the exact code before ordering.
Can I order dragline rope by diameter alone?
No. Specify the machine, operating function, construction, core, lay, tensile grade, minimum breaking force, lubrication, finished length and terminations.
What documents should accompany a dragline rope order?
Ask for reel-linked material certificates and break-test reports. For rope intended for lifting, confirm with the relevant machinery safety authority which conformity and minimum-breaking-force documents are required, and request the applicable documents.
Does the waste-control flag apply to new dragline rope?
Waste shipment controls apply only if the material is waste. The tariff flags the other-coated steel-rope line; have your broker confirm the requirement for your actual shipment.
