Sourcing steel mine-hoist wire ropes from China
Steel mine-hoist wire ropes from China pay 0% UK customs duty plus 60.4% residual anti-dumping duty on the non-stainless rope lines shown. For personnel winding, the mine operator must provide suitable shaft equipment. Agree the rope specification for the actual winder. Cambridge China Bridge sources steel mine-hoist wire ropes.

0% customs duty plus anti-dumping duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7312 covers stranded wire, ropes, cables, plaited bands, slings and similar iron or steel goods without electrical insulation. The selected lines cover non-stainless steel ropes, including locked-coil ropes. Their customs duty is uniformly 0%, with residual anti-dumping duty of 60.4% on goods from China. The supplied record lists no countervailing duty, suspensions or steel trade measure for these lines.
The tariff attaches import and export waste controls to 7312 10 98 19. Waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste. If a China shipment contains discarded rope or scrap, confirm the applicable import requirements with your customs broker before dispatch; the tariff entry alone does not settle the procedure for that consignment.
Confirm the commodity code using the material, maximum cross-sectional dimension, coating and dispatch country. A mine-hoist description does not determine the code. For the wider rope classification context, see steel crane wire ropes.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uncoated or zinc-coated steel rope, cross-section over 12 mm up to 24 mm | 7312 10 83 19 | 0% | 60.40% residual anti-dumping |
| Uncoated or zinc-coated steel rope, cross-section over 24 mm up to 48 mm | 7312 10 85 19 | 0% | 60.40% residual anti-dumping |
| Uncoated or zinc-coated steel rope, cross-section over 48 mm | 7312 10 89 19 | 0% | 60.40% residual anti-dumping |
| Other-coated steel rope, including locked-coil rope, cross-section over 3 mm | 7312 10 98 19 | 0% | 60.40% residual anti-dumping |
Specify the rope for the winding system
Start with the mine's winding duty: drum or friction winder, personnel or materials, suspended load, shaft conditions, winding travel and the existing sheave or drum arrangement. Ask the winding engineer to agree the rope construction, core, lay direction, diameter, minimum breaking force, coating, lubricant and termination design. Do not accept a supplier's generic crane-rope specification as the purchasing brief.
Agree rope selection, operating life, inspection and replacement arrangements within the mine's written scheme before ordering. For personnel travel in relevant shafts or outlets, the mine operator must provide suitable equipment. Obtain reel-linked material certificates and breaking-force test reports, and agree how samples, end preparation and installation instructions will be supplied.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10 tonnes of 16 mm galvanised steel mine-hoist wire rope under 7312 10 83 19, invoiced at £22,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £24,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £24,000, so it is £4,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match each reel's identification to the order, manufacturing batch, material certificate and breaking-force report.
Construction: check diameter, strand arrangement or locked-coil construction, core, lay direction and supplied length against the agreed specification.
Condition: inspect accessible rope for corrosion, broken wires, kinks, flattened areas, coating damage and uneven lubricant coverage; photograph damaged packaging before unloading.
Ends and reels: check end preparation and any supplied terminations against the drawing, reel damage and winding direction. Hold suspect reels apart pending the winding engineer's assessment.

What goes wrong
Matching diameter alone leaves room for the wrong construction, core or lay. A certificate may describe a different batch, while handling damage or poor lubrication can undermine an otherwise correct rope. Specify the complete rope and its interfaces, verify reel traceability and investigate discrepancies before installation.
A duty estimate that includes only customs duty misses the anti-dumping cost. Another mistake is accepting a general lifting certificate as evidence that the rope suits the mine's winder. Settle classification and the actual winding specification before placing the order.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on steel mine-hoist rope from China?
The selected non-stainless steel rope lines carry 0% customs duty plus 60.4% residual anti-dumping duty. No suspension or countervailing duty is listed in the supplied tariff record.
Can I replace mine-hoist rope with crane rope of the same diameter?
Have the winding engineer assess the complete specification. Diameter alone does not establish compatibility with the winder, sheaves, terminations and operating duty.
What certificates should I ask the Chinese factory for?
Request material certificates and breaking-force test reports linked to the supplied reels, together with the agreed construction, lubricant and termination details. Check that reports describe the actual batch.
Does the waste control apply to new mine-hoist rope?
Waste shipment controls apply only if the material is waste. The tariff attaches waste controls to the other-coated rope line; ask your broker to confirm applicability to the actual consignment.
