Sourcing steel elevator wire ropes from China
Steel elevator wire ropes from China pay 0% UK customs duty, with an additional 60.40% anti-dumping duty on non-stainless steel ropes over 3 mm. Confirm with the relevant authority which machinery supply rules apply to rope supplied for lifting. Specify the rope for the intended lift and verify its certificates. Cambridge China Bridge sources steel elevator wire ropes.

Customs duty and anti-dumping on elevator ropes
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7312 covers stranded wire, ropes and cables of iron or steel that are not electrically insulated. Elevator rope classification depends on material, maximum cross-sectional dimension, coating and consignment route. The table selects steel rope lines; it does not establish suitability for a particular lift. See the wider wire rope guide.
The selected lines carry 0% customs duty for goods from China and an additional residual anti-dumping duty of 60.40%. The published measure is maintained until 21 April 2028. The supplied tariff snapshot lists no suspensions or countervailing duty on these lines. Budget for anti-dumping separately from ordinary customs duty.
The tariff attaches import and export waste controls to 7312 10 98 19. For imports into England under waste notification controls, the exporter in China must apply to the competent authority there for consent. Ask your customs broker to confirm waste status and the applicable requirements before shipment. For the commodity code, provide the rope specification, coating, dimensions and origin.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uncoated or zinc-coated steel rope, over 3 mm up to 12 mm, other consignments | 7312 10 81 19 | 0% | 60.40% residual anti-dumping |
| Uncoated or zinc-coated steel rope, over 12 mm up to 24 mm, other consignments | 7312 10 83 19 | 0% | 60.40% residual anti-dumping |
| Uncoated or zinc-coated steel rope, over 24 mm up to 48 mm, other consignments | 7312 10 85 19 | 0% | 60.40% residual anti-dumping |
| Steel rope with other coatings, over 3 mm, other consignments | 7312 10 98 19 | 0% | 60.40% residual anti-dumping |
Specify the rope for the lift
State whether the rope is for traction, suspension or compensation. Obtain the lift engineer's agreed specification for diameter and tolerance, strand construction, wire tensile grade, core material, lay direction, minimum breaking force, lubrication and cut lengths. For a replacement set, record the existing rope designation and the lift manufacturer's requirements rather than ordering by diameter alone.
Confirm with the relevant authority which machinery supply rules and conformity-documentation requirements apply to rope supplied for lifting. Request any applicable declaration of conformity and a rope certificate stating minimum breaking force. Match the documents to the supplied construction and batch. Agree the evidence and sample testing through testing and certification before approving production.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10 tonnes of galvanised steel elevator wire rope, 16 mm diameter under 7312 10 83 19, invoiced at £22,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £24,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £24,000, so it is £4,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match reel references, batch records and certificates to the order; compare core, construction and lay direction with the approved specification.
Dimensions: measure rope diameter at several positions, confirm cut lengths and check that ropes intended for the same lift set match the agreed specification.
Condition: inspect for broken wires, kinks, flattened strands, corrosion, uneven lubrication and damage where the rope contacts reel flanges.
Performance: review breaking-force test results against the ordered minimum and trace the tested sample to the supplied batch; hold unmatched or damaged rope for engineering review.

What goes wrong
A rope can match the ordered diameter while having a different core, wire grade or strand construction. That can change its behaviour in the lift. A generic certificate does not identify the delivered batch, and an approved sample does not establish the condition of every reel. Keep the specification, batch evidence and arrival checks connected.
Poor reeling and handling can introduce kinks or crush strands before installation. Lubrication that differs from the agreed specification also needs engineering review. Do not accept a proposed change of material or coating simply to reduce duty; confirm both lift suitability and tariff classification before changing the order.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on steel elevator wire ropes from China?
The selected steel rope lines carry 0% customs duty plus 60.40% anti-dumping duty. Confirm material, dimensions, coating and consignment route before declaring the code.
Can I order replacement elevator rope by diameter alone?
No. Agree construction, core, wire grade, lay, breaking force and lubrication with the lift engineer, as well as diameter and cut lengths.
What documents should accompany elevator wire rope?
For rope supplied for lifting, obtain conformity documentation and a rope certificate stating minimum breaking force. Match the specification and batch references to the delivered reels.
What should I check when the reels arrive?
Check reel identity, certificates, diameter, lengths, construction and lay. Look for broken wires, kinks, crushed strands, corrosion and uneven lubrication before releasing the rope for installation.
