Sourcing steel-cord belts from China

Steel-cord rubber conveyor belts from China carry 6% UK duty, with no anti-dumping duty recorded. The metal-only code applies only where reinforcement is entirely metal. Specify cord construction, rubber covers and splice requirements before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources steel-cord rubber conveyor belts.

UK duty on steel-cord rubber conveyor belts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 4010 covers conveyor or transmission belts or belting of vulcanised rubber. Steel-cord conveyor belts reinforced only with metal fall under 4010 11 00 00. The table repeats this commodity line for different purchasing specifications; these are not separate tariff subdivisions.

The supplied tariff record gives 6% duty for goods from China and records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for this line. Suspensions shown elsewhere in the heading concern transmission belts, not this steel-cord conveyor belt line.

Ask the factory for a cross-section and a complete reinforcement description, including any textile reinforcement, before confirming the commodity code. For the wider rubber conveyor belt family, see the rubber chevron belt guide.

Specify cords, covers and the splice

Specify belt width, supplied length, tensile rating, cord diameter and spacing, edge construction, and upper and lower cover thicknesses. Give the factory the conveyor layout, pulley details, conveyed material and operating conditions. Agree whether the belt arrives open-ended or joined, together with the splice drawing, materials and installation instructions.

Use ISO 15236-1 as the steel-cord belt specification reference identified in our published belting guide. Agree cover properties and the evidence needed for abrasion, flame resistance or conductivity where relevant. Match reports to the actual cord construction and rubber compound being ordered.

REACH restrictions can limit, ban or impose conditions on placing substances on the market or using them. Obtain composition information for the rubber compound and arrange an assessment of applicable UK REACH restrictions. Use testing and certification support to agree the evidence before production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 12 rolls of steel-cord rubber conveyor belt, illustrative only under 4010 11 00 00, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £27,500. Duty at 6% is £1,650. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £29,150, so it is £5,830. Import taxes total £7,480; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,650 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure width, supplied length and cover thickness against the approved drawing; record measurements by roll.

Cord construction: examine an agreed cut sample for cord spacing, alignment, edge clearance, exposed metal and separation between rubber and cords.

Surface and packing: check for cracks, blisters, damaged edges, distorted rolls and packing damage on arrival.

Traceability and splice: match roll identification to batch reports, the approved construction and splice instructions; keep photographs and retained samples.

What goes wrong

Thin covers wear through early. Uneven cord placement or poor rubber-to-cord bonding can undermine the belt and its splice. A replacement belt may match the width yet have a different cord layout that does not match the existing splice design. Resolve these differences on the drawing before approving production.

A report for another rubber compound or belt construction does not establish the ordered belt's performance. Agree rejection criteria and sample identification before shipment, then compare arrival checks with the factory inspection records. See quality inspection explained.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on steel-cord conveyor belts from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 6% for metal-only reinforced rubber conveyor belts under 4010 11 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded.

Do all steel-cord belts use the same commodity code?

4010 11 00 00 describes conveyor belts reinforced only with metal. Give your broker the full reinforcement construction, especially where textile reinforcement is also present.

What should I specify for a replacement steel-cord belt?

Specify width, length, tensile rating, cord diameter and spacing, cover thicknesses, edge construction and splice design. Provide pulley details and operating conditions.

Can I accept the factory's existing belt test report?

Check that it identifies the ordered cord construction, rubber compound and relevant batch. Agree sampling and acceptance criteria rather than relying on a report for another belt.
