Duty on stainless steel flour sifters

Heading 7323 covers table, kitchen and other household articles of iron or steel. For stainless steel flour sifters, the relevant candidate is 7323 93 00 90, other stainless steel household articles. The table separates product designs sharing that commodity line. See the stainless steel colanders guide for related kitchenware within the wider heading.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, this line carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or steel measure. The tariff attaches import and export waste controls. Waste shipment controls apply only to waste. For goods from China classified as waste, confirm the applicable requirement with your customs broker before shipment.

Confirm the commodity code using the finished product's materials, construction and function. Give your broker photographs and a component description, especially where the sifter includes plastic parts or is supplied as part of a set.

Specify the mesh and sifting mechanism

Specify the stainless steel material for the body, mesh, agitator and fasteners separately. Agree mesh aperture, wire thickness, usable capacity, rim dimensions and handle attachment. Approve a sample using the flour your customers will sift, checking flow, retained lumps and flour escaping around the mesh edge.

Food contact materials must be safe and suitable for their intended use. Ask for supporting material information and test reports matching the finished sifter. Agree how flour is removed from seams and moving parts after washing, and check any dishwasher claim on samples.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 3000 stainless steel flour sifters under 7323 93 00 90, invoiced at £7,500 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £8,400. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £8,400, so it is £1,680. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Mesh: inspect for broken wires, loose edges and uneven openings; compare flour flow with the approved sample.

Mechanism: operate the squeeze handle or crank with flour loaded; check sticking, rubbing and loose fasteners.

Finish: check rims, joints and wire ends for sharp points, polishing residue and visible corrosion.

Cleaning and packing: wash and dry samples, inspect trapped flour and water, then check arrival cartons for crushed bodies and distorted mesh.

What goes wrong

Mesh pulls out of its rim, the agitator rubs against the screen, or the handle works loose when loaded. Flour collects inside rolled seams and around the mechanism, while trapped wash water leaves corrosion marks. A sifter can look acceptable empty but bind when filled.

Keep the approved sample and component specification as references for quality inspection. Compare production sifters using the same flour and cleaning method, and agree rejection criteria for loose wires, sharp edges and mechanism faults before production.
