Duty on stainless steel service jugs

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, heading 7323 covers iron or steel table, kitchen and household articles and their parts, alongside steel wool and scourers. Ordinary stainless steel beverage service jugs fall within the stainless steel other-articles line, 7323 93 00 90. The table lists jug variants sharing that code. See the stainless steel stockpots guide for the wider heading.

The supplied tariff record gives 0% duty for goods from China on this line, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or steel measure. It attaches import and export waste controls. Waste shipment controls apply only to waste. For a shipment from China classified as waste, confirm the applicable requirements with your customs broker before shipment.

Confirm the construction and intended use through finding your commodity code, especially for vacuum-insulated or electrically heated designs. Do not assume the ordinary jug code covers those products. The UK import duty and VAT guide explains the separate import tax calculation.

Specify the jug, spout and beverage use

Specify the stainless steel grade, wall thickness, usable capacity, overall dimensions, empty weight and finish. Define whether the jug serves water, milk, cream or hot drinks, and whether it has a lid. Agree the spout profile, handle clearance, base stability and how the jug should pour when nearly full and nearly empty.

Food contact materials must be safe and suitable for their intended use. Ask for material identification and supporting food contact test evidence covering the finished jug and any beverage-contact lid, seal or coating. Give the laboratory the intended drinks, contact conditions and cleaning method. Use the food contact materials guide to plan the evidence request.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of stainless steel water service jugs, not a quotation under 7323 93 00 90, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,900, so it is £780. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Pouring: fill and pour production samples at different fill levels; check dribbling, splashing, flow control and lid retention.

Handles and base: check attachment welds, grip clearance and stability with the jug filled; inspect for rocking and distortion.

Food-contact surfaces: inspect inside the spout, seams and rim for burrs, pits, polishing residue and inaccessible crevices; match materials and finishes to the approved sample.

Cleaning and packing: repeat the agreed cleaning cycle and inspect for staining or trapped residue; check cartons protect rims, handles and finishes. Record findings through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A polished sample can hide a poorly formed spout that dribbles down the body. Handle welds can loosen, bases can rock, and rolled rims or lid hinges can retain milk residue. Compare production samples with the approved jug after pouring and cleaning, rather than judging appearance alone.

Material substitutions and changed coatings can make the supplier's existing test evidence irrelevant to the delivered jug. Agree written approval before substitutions and check that reports identify the supplied construction. Packing failures leave dented rims, bent handles and scratched surfaces even when the jug was acceptable before dispatch.
