Sourcing spiral-welded steel pipes from China
Selected spiral-welded steel pipes under heading 7306 carry UK duty of 0% to 50% from China, with quota relief possible on eligible lines. Diameter, material and intended use determine classification; construction-product marking needs checking for structural use. Cambridge China Bridge sources spiral-welded steel pipes.

UK duty and the diameter boundary
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7306 covers other iron or steel tubes, pipes and hollow profiles, including welded products. This guide selects circular pipe lines relevant to spiral welding. Circular welded steel pipes exceeding 406.4 mm external diameter fall under heading 7305; use the large-diameter welded pipe guide for those products.
The supplied snapshot lists 0% for stainless line pipe and 50% for the other selected lines. It records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control on these selected codes. The published welded steel tube guide explains eligible 0% steel quotas and separate anti-dumping exposure on smaller non-alloy circular pipes. Ask your broker to confirm quota eligibility and availability rather than budgeting on automatic relief.
Confirm the commodity code using external diameter, steel composition, manufacturing process and intended use. A spiral seam alone does not determine the code. Confirm with HMRC or your customs broker whether and when these heading 7306 steel products fall within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism; ask the mill for emissions information alongside material records.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel spiral-welded oil or gas line pipe | 7306 11 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Other spiral-welded oil or gas line pipe | 7306 19 00 00 | 50% | None |
| Non-alloy steel spiral pipe, diameter over 168.3 mm up to 406.4 mm | 7306 30 80 00 | 50% | None |
| Other stainless steel spiral-welded circular pipe | 7306 40 80 00 | 50% | None |
| Other alloy steel spiral-welded circular pipe, excluding precision tubes | 7306 50 80 00 | 50% | None |
Specify the spiral seam and pipe ends
State steel grade, external diameter, wall thickness, length, ovality and straightness tolerances. Identify the application: structural work, oil or gas line pipe, or another pipe service. Specify the spiral welding process, permitted strip-end joints, weld profile, end squareness, bevel geometry and any internal weld dressing needed for assembly.
Agree weld inspection methods, coverage, acceptance criteria and repair records before production. For pressure service, specify the agreed pressure test and traceable results. Define external coating, internal lining, surface preparation, coating thickness, inspection method and bare end lengths for site welding.
For construction use, establish the applicable product standard or technical assessment before agreeing marking. Under the CE construction-product route, a harmonised standard or European Technical Assessment is needed, and the manufacturer must draw up a declaration of performance. Great Britain continues to accept valid CE marking. Match the declared intended use to the project rather than accepting a generic certificate.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 tonnes of non-alloy steel spiral-welded pipe under 7306 30 80 00, invoiced at £32,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £36,000. Duty at 50% is £18,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £54,000, so it is £10,800. Import taxes total £28,800; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £18,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Traceability: match pipe markings and heat numbers to mill certificates, steel grade and the agreed test records.
Geometry: measure wall thickness, diameter, ovality, straightness and length; check bevels, end squareness and fit against mating components.
Spiral weld: inspect the seam and strip-end joints for cracks, undercut and uneven weld profile; reconcile non-destructive testing and repair records with pipe identities.
Coating and delivery: check thickness, coverage, lining condition and handling damage on arrival; inspect end protection and bundle identification. Agree the scope through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
Pipe ends arrive oval or with inconsistent bevels, so site joints do not fit. Weld reports cover a different batch, strip-end joints lack inspection records, or coating is damaged by lifting chains. Settle repair acceptance, traceability and lifting protection in the purchase specification.
A supplier's generic spiral-pipe description can hide the diameter boundary or the difference between line pipe and structural pipe. Confirm classification before ordering, then check quota availability before clearance. Keep the agreed specification, mill records and inspection findings together.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on spiral-welded steel pipe from China?
The supplied snapshot lists 0% for 7306 11 00 00 and 50% for the other selected lines. Eligible steel quota relief may reduce duty to 0%; confirm the exact code and quota position with your broker.
Are large spiral-welded pipes covered by heading 7306?
Circular welded steel pipes exceeding 406.4 mm external diameter fall under heading 7305. Confirm diameter and intended use before using a heading 7306 code.
Does spiral-welded pipe need CE marking?
Check its construction use and applicable standard or technical assessment. Construction-product CE marking needs a harmonised standard or European Technical Assessment; valid CE marking remains accepted in Great Britain.
What should I ask the Chinese pipe mill to provide?
Ask for traceable mill certificates, weld inspection and repair records, agreed pressure-test results where relevant, dimensional reports and coating or lining inspection records.
