Sourcing polyester coil coatings from China
Solvent-based polyester coil coatings from China carry 0% or 6% UK duty depending on whether they are coatings or qualifying polyester solutions. For Great Britain, check chemical classification, hazard labels and safety data sheets before supply. Cambridge China Bridge sources solvent-based polyester coil coatings.

Polyester coatings and resin solutions
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 3208 covers polymer-based paints and varnishes in a non-aqueous medium. Other polyester-based coatings under 3208 10 90 00 carry 0% duty from China; polyester solutions meeting the chapter note under 3208 10 10 00 carry 6%. The supplied snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty for these lines.
The snapshot also lists a suspension to 0% for specified polyester resin solutions. Ask your broker to check its conditions rather than applying it to a formulated coil coating. Both polyester lines carry an ozone-depleting substances restriction and waste import and export controls. Confirm the applicable declarations and requirements with your customs broker before shipping from China.
The table distinguishes coating applications sharing the same tariff line. Confirm the binder composition and supplied form using the commodity code guide, rather than relying on the name “coil coating”. For other binders, see the wider solvent-based paints guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polyester coil topcoats, other than chapter-note solutions | 3208 10 90 00 | 0% | None |
| Polyester solutions for coating manufacture, meeting the chapter note | 3208 10 10 00 | 6% | None |
Specify the substrate and curing window
State whether the coating is a primer, topcoat or backing coat. Specify the metal substrate, pretreatment, compatible primer, colour reference, gloss, dry film thickness and forming operation. Agree viscosity and solids checks, dilution solvent, peak metal temperature and oven dwell conditions. Approve panels made on your intended substrate and cured within your line’s operating window.
Request the formulation information needed for chemical classification and UK REACH checks, together with an English safety data sheet. Ask HSE to confirm the registration position for each constituent substance, including how annual quantities of one tonne and any coverage by the Chinese manufacturer’s appointed representative in Great Britain affect your obligations. Classification and labelling need scientific competence; confirm the applicable hazard-label and packaging requirements for imported coatings with HSE.
For an industrial coil trial, compare adhesion, bend performance, solvent resistance and surface appearance against an approved reference. Agree the weathering and corrosion evidence appropriate to the finished coil’s intended use. A decorative paint sample alone does not demonstrate performance on your coil line.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5 tonnes of solvent-based polyester coil topcoat under 3208 10 90 00, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £26,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £26,000, so it is £5,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Batch identity: match container labels, batch references and certificates of analysis to the approved formulation; retain a sealed sample from each batch.
Liquid condition: check viscosity, solids, settling and contamination against the agreed methods and acceptance criteria.
Cured panels: check colour, gloss, film thickness, adhesion and cracking after bending on the specified substrate using the agreed curing conditions.
Packing and paperwork: check seals, leaks and container condition; reconcile hazard labels and the English safety data sheet, and confirm dangerous goods arrangements for flammable grades before booking.

What goes wrong
A coating can match the colour sample yet crack during forming or lose adhesion because the substrate, pretreatment or cure differs. Lower solids change the deposited film, while an unsuitable solvent blend can leave pinholes or uneven appearance. Record the trial conditions and compare production batches with retained samples.
Do not treat waste coating as ordinary saleable stock. For waste imports under notification controls, the exporter must seek consent from the competent authority in the dispatch country. Confirm the China-to-UK route with your broker and waste regulator. Ozone-depleting substances require an import licence for permitted uses; an ordinary coating order should have its formulation checked against the tariff declaration.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK duty on polyester coil coatings from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot shows 0% for other polyester coatings under 3208 10 90 00 and 6% for qualifying polyester solutions under 3208 10 10 00, with a conditional suspension for specified resin solutions.
Can I use the same coating on galvanised steel and aluminium?
Ask for substrate-specific trials. Agree pretreatment, primer and curing conditions, then check adhesion and bend performance on each intended metal.
What paperwork should I request from the coating factory?
Request an English safety data sheet, technical data sheet, batch certificate and formulation information for chemical checks. Reconcile these with the container labels and transport arrangements.
How do I approve a polyester coil coating sample?
Run it on your intended substrate and pretreatment within the agreed curing window. Compare colour, gloss, adhesion, bending and solvent resistance with the approved reference.
