Sourcing snowmobiles from China
Snowmobiles from China carry 4% to 10% UK duty depending on propulsion and classification. Demonstrate product safety compliance before consumer sale, and confirm engine approval and markings for combustion models before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources snowmobiles.

UK duty on snowmobiles
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8703 includes vehicles specially designed for travelling on snow. Combustion-engine snowmobiles under 8703 10 11 00 carry 4% duty from China; other snow vehicles under 8703 10 18 00 carry 10%. The table separates propulsion variants sharing these codes. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded. The suspension applies only to ambulances. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.
The tariff attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas and waste import controls. Pre-charged equipment includes vehicles with air-conditioning. For an equipped model, obtain the refrigerant details and ask your customs broker to confirm the requirements for goods from China. If vehicles are classed as waste and notification controls apply, the exporter must seek consent from the dispatch-country authority. Confirm the full waste shipment route before loading. The file also lists cultural-object and waste export controls.
Send your broker photographs, propulsion details, passenger layout and intended use, then confirm the commodity code. Do not choose a passenger-car code simply because the snowmobile transports people. For the wider heading, see petrol passenger quad bikes.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol-engine snowmobiles | 8703 10 11 00 | 4% | None |
| Other snow vehicles, including electric snowmobiles | 8703 10 18 00 | 10% | None |
Specify the snow, load and cold-start conditions
Specify engine or motor, cooling arrangement, track width and length, lug profile, ski construction, suspension travel, passenger seating and intended load. Describe packed trails or deep snow and the expected operating temperature. Agree cold-start, braking and loaded manoeuvring tests under those conditions. Ask the approval authority to confirm engine approval and markings for the exact combustion model; engine type approval concerns emissions.
Ask for model-matched safety evidence, instructions and component identification. Consumer products should only be sold after product safety compliance has been demonstrated. Where machinery rules apply, conformity assessment and the relevant conformity marking are required. Confirm the applicable route before accepting a supplier's certificate. Specify throttle return, engine-stop tether, drive guards and hot-surface protection. Agree replacement tracks, drive belts, ski runners and repair information with the factory.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-business batch of petrol snowmobiles, not a quotation under 8703 10 11 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,000. Duty at 4% is £440. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £11,440, so it is £2,288. Import taxes total £2,728; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £440 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Track and skis: inspect track damage, alignment and tension against the manual; check ski runners, steering play, suspension fixings and transport damage.
Controls and stopping: test throttle return, stop switch and fitted tether; check braking and parking restraint on an agreed controlled snow route.
Cold operation: witness a cold start and loaded run under agreed conditions; record leaks, overheating, abnormal vibration and starting faults. For electric models, compare pack and charger identification with the order.
Handover: match vehicle and engine identifiers, instructions, safety evidence and spare parts to the order. Keep the inspection record for comparison on arrival.

What goes wrong
A warm workshop demonstration can conceal poor cold starting, stiff controls or battery performance that falls short in snow. A track suited to packed trails may not suit deep snow. Misaligned tracks, damaged ski runners and loose suspension fixings can be missed in catalogue photographs.
An engine, drive belt or controller substitution can change performance and make the supplied documents difficult to match to the vehicle. Freeze the agreed component specification, record identifiers before dispatch and repeat the agreed arrival checks. Do not accept an off-road description as sufficient safety evidence.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on snowmobiles from China?
Combustion-engine snowmobiles under 8703 10 11 00 carry 4%; other snow vehicles under 8703 10 18 00 carry 10%. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded. Import VAT is normally 20%.
What safety documents should I request for a Chinese snowmobile?
Request evidence matching the exact model, safe-use instructions and component identifiers. Confirm the applicable conformity route and combustion-engine approval with the relevant authority before ordering.
Can I rely on a factory video of the snowmobile running?
Use it as supporting evidence. Agree a cold start and loaded snow test, including throttle return, stopping, steering and track behaviour. A warm workshop run does not demonstrate performance in your operating conditions.
What spare parts should come with imported snowmobiles?
Agree model-matched drive belts, ski runners, track components, control cables and repair information. For electric models, confirm replacement battery and charger arrangements before ordering.
