Sourcing electric go-karts from China
Electric go-karts classified in the electric-only vehicle lines of heading 8703 carry 10% UK duty from China; the listed comparison lines also carry 10%. Consumer sales need demonstrated product safety compliance. Specify track use, braking and battery performance before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources electric go-karts.

UK duty on electric go-karts
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8703 covers vehicles principally designed to transport people, including racing cars. The selected electric-only and comparison lines all carry 10% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. The autonomous suspension applies only to ambulances. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.
The selected lines attach fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls; the golf-car comparison line also attaches waste import controls. Pre-charged equipment includes vehicles with air-conditioning. Ask your customs broker to confirm the requirements for the exact goods from China. If goods are classed as waste and notification controls apply, shipment must await consent from the destination, dispatch and transit authorities. The file also lists cultural-object export controls and, on the golf-car line, waste export controls.
The table compares neighbouring branches and does not establish interchangeable go-kart codes. Give your broker the chassis design, seating, propulsion, new or used condition and intended use, then confirm the commodity code. For the wider heading comparison, see electric golf carts.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

Specify the kart for the circuit and charging area
State whether the kart is for circuit rental, competition or private recreation. Specify driver fit, seat and pedal adjustment, steering clearance, tyre type, bumper coverage and protection around moving parts. Agree acceleration settings, speed control, braking tests and the behaviour of any remote stop system. Describe the driver load, circuit surface and repeated driving sessions used for acceptance testing.
Name the battery chemistry, pack capacity, motor, controller, charger and connectors in the order. Specify secure battery mounting, cable protection and access for maintenance. Request wiring diagrams, charging instructions, fault diagnostics and replacement brake, steering and battery components. For lithium-battery vehicles, arrange battery transport documentation and the dangerous-goods shipment with the forwarder.
For consumer sales, demonstrate product safety compliance before selling. Separate circuit use from any proposed road use and confirm the approval route for the exact vehicle before ordering. If vehicle approval is required, proof must accompany the registration application. Use testing and certification support to review the intended use and product documents.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small circuit order of new electric go-karts, subject to code confirmation; not a quotation under 8703 80 10 90, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,000. Duty at 10% is £1,100. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,100, so it is £2,420. Import taxes total £3,520; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,100 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Braking and steering: test stopping behaviour on a controlled circuit under the agreed load; check pedal return, steering play, wheel alignment and fastener security.
Drive controls: check acceleration settings, throttle release and any remote stop function, including the agreed response to loss of communication.
Battery and charging: match pack, controller and charger identifiers to the order; inspect mounts and cables, then record charging and repeated-session performance.
Chassis and handover: inspect welds, bumpers, guards, seat fixings and transit damage; match instructions, diagnostics and spares to the packing list. Keep the inspection record for arrival comparison.

What goes wrong
A kart can match the sample externally while using a different battery, controller or charger. Short demonstration runs can miss reduced performance as components warm up. Poor pedal return, loose steering joints, damaged battery mounts and exposed wiring can escape a photographic inspection.
Write component substitutions and acceptance tests into the purchase specification. Test the agreed controls and repeated-session performance before shipment and compare the arrival condition with that record. Resolve braking, charging or stop-control faults before putting the karts into service, and agree who supplies replacement components.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on electric go-karts from China?
The selected electric-only and comparison lines carry 10% duty, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the kart's code. The suspension is for ambulances only; import VAT is normally 20%.
Can I use an imported electric go-kart on the road?
Confirm the approval route for the exact vehicle before ordering. If approval is required, proof must accompany the registration application. A supplier's road-use description is insufficient to settle the question.
What battery information should I request?
Ask for chemistry, pack capacity and identification, matching charger details, wiring diagrams, transport documentation and replacement-pack arrangements. Agree tests covering repeated driving sessions.
What should I check when electric go-karts arrive?
Compare components and identifiers with the order, inspect chassis and battery mounts, test braking and steering, check drive and stop controls, and complete the agreed charging and repeated-session tests.
