Zero duty, with species and finish checks
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 4408 covers veneer sheets and other lengthwise-cut wood not exceeding 6 mm thick. For sliced cherry veneer, thickness and whether it is planed, sanded or end-jointed distinguish the relevant lines. Planed and sanded or end-jointed versions share a code in the table.
The relevant Chinese-origin lines carry 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension recorded. They attach a Quarantine Release Certificate control and CITES import and export controls. Ask your customs broker to confirm their application to the botanical species and shipment from China before dispatch. Where plant health inspection applies, a quarantine release certificate is issued if the material passes.
Confirm the finish, thickness and botanical species using finding your commodity code. These rows cover loose veneer, so describe any backing or assembled panel separately when checking classification. See the wood veneer sheets guide for the wider heading.

| Planed sliced cherry veneer | 4408 90 15 00 | 0% | None |
Specify cherry colour and matched leaf sequence
Specify the botanical species, slicing pattern, usable leaf dimensions, thickness tolerance and moisture condition. Agree limits for pale sapwood, dark streaks, gum marks, knots and splits using retained samples. State whether adjacent leaves must be book-matched or slip-matched, and require bundle labels that preserve the cutting sequence.
Approve a sample with your intended adhesive, substrate and finish. Record the accepted colour under agreed lighting, rather than relying on a supplier's photograph. Agree whether repaired leaves are acceptable and how damaged edges reduce usable area.
Confirm with the relevant authority whether veneer placed on the Great Britain market is covered by the UK Timber Regulations and what due-diligence requirements apply. Gather species, harvest-country and supply-chain information, assess illegal-harvest risk, address identified risk and keep records to support that review. Ask where the cherry was harvested, rather than recording only the Chinese slicing factory.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 bundles of unsanded sliced cherry veneer, 0.6 mm thick under 4408 90 85 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £2,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £14,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £14,800, so it is £2,960. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: compare the botanical species and harvest records with the order and bundle labels; resolve missing or conflicting information before shipment.
Appearance and sequence: lay adjacent leaves out in order, compare colour and defects with retained samples, and check that bundle labels preserve the agreed matching sequence.
Thickness and moisture: measure across sampled leaves and check moisture with a calibrated meter against the agreed specification, including checks on arrival.
Packing and usable area: check leaf counts, edge damage, splits, water staining and mould; confirm that flat supports and wrapping protect the leaves during handling.

What goes wrong
Bundles can contain acceptable individual leaves but fail as a matched set because their sequence has been lost or pale sapwood exceeds the agreed allowance. Uneven thickness causes uneven pressing, while wet veneer can stain or grow mould and dry leaves can split during handling.
Inspect matched sets as well as individual leaves, and retain the approved finished sample. A missing harvest trail also leaves the importer without the information needed for timber due diligence. Resolve appearance and paperwork gaps before dispatch, then document any damage immediately on arrival.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
