Sourcing sliced beech veneer sheets from China

Sliced beech veneer sheets from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant heading 4408 lines, with no recorded trade remedy. Zero duty, with timber and species checks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 4408 covers veneer sheets and similar sliced wood up to 6 mm thick. The relevant beech lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Unfinished sheets split at 1 mm; planed, sanded or end-jointed sheets have a separate line. The sanded and end-jointed examples in the table share a commodity code.

The relevant lines attach a Quarantine Release Certificate control and CITES import and export controls. Confirm with your customs broker whether plant health requirements apply to the declared beech species and origin. Where regulated wood from China requires quarantine clearance, present the clearance certificate to HMRC with the customs declaration. For species covered by CITES permit requirements, confirm the applicable import or export documents with your broker; the tariff flag alone does not establish the species' status.

Confirm the commodity code using the botanical species, thickness and actual finishing operations. For the wider heading, see the sliced maple veneer guide. The importer placing veneer on the Great Britain market should confirm timber legality obligations with the relevant timber authority. As sourcing checks, gather species, harvest-country and supply-chain information, assess illegal-harvesting risk, reduce identified risk and keep records. A Chinese factory address does not identify where the trees were harvested.

Specify beech colour, grain and matching

Specify the botanical species rather than accepting a trade name alone. State whether you want steamed or unsteamed beech, and approve a colour sample after applying your intended finish. Agree the slicing pattern, acceptable grain and limits for dark heartwood, knots, stains and splits.

Write the sheet dimensions, thickness tolerance, usable width and moisture acceptance into the order. Specify loose leaves or joined sheets, and whether faces will be book-matched or slip-matched. Require bundles to retain their cutting sequence and identification. Trial the sample with your intended substrate, adhesive and pressing process before accepting production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 bundles of unsanded sliced beech veneer, 0.6 mm thick under 4408 90 85 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £2,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £14,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £14,800, so it is £2,960. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity and records: compare the botanical species and bundle references with the order and harvest evidence; investigate conflicting origin descriptions before dispatch.

Thickness and usable area: measure across sampled leaves, check edge splits and trimming losses, and compare usable dimensions with the agreed specification.

Colour and sequence: lay out consecutive leaves, compare steamed colour and grain with the approved sample, and check that matching bundles remain in sequence.

Moisture and packing: check moisture against the agreed acceptance level, inspect for mould and staining, and confirm that flat supports and protective wrapping prevent crushing and wetting.

What goes wrong

A bundle can look uniform on top but contain darker heartwood, short leaves or damaged edges underneath. Mixed steaming batches give inconsistent colour after finishing. Lost leaf sequence spoils matched cabinet fronts, while thickness variation can cause uneven pressing or sanding through the face.

Wet packs can stain or grow mould; dry, brittle leaves split during handling. Photograph defects before separating bundles and keep their identification intact. Agree how usable area and rejected leaves will be assessed before ordering, and use an inspection brief that checks inside the packs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on sliced beech veneer from China?

The relevant heading 4408 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff reading, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Import VAT is separate.

Do sliced beech veneer sheets need timber due diligence?

Confirm with the relevant timber authority which timber legality obligations apply when the veneer is first placed on the Great Britain market. As sourcing checks, gather species, harvest-country and supply-chain evidence, assess illegal-harvesting risk, reduce identified risk and keep records.

Does the CITES tariff flag mean beech needs a permit?

The flag alone does not establish the species' status. Identify the botanical species and ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable CITES documents and quarantine release requirement.

How do I keep beech veneer consistent across cabinet fronts?

Approve colour after finishing, specify steamed or unsteamed material and the matching method, and keep consecutive leaves in identified bundles. Inspect leaves inside each sampled pack.
