Sourcing sleeper coaches from China
Sleeper coaches from China carry 10% or 16% UK duty, depending on propulsion and engine capacity, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Settle the approval route before ordering and check the sleeping layout against the vehicle documents. Cambridge China Bridge sources sleeper coaches.

Sleeper coach duty follows the drivetrain
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8702 covers motor vehicles carrying ten or more persons, including the driver. This guide covers road coaches with sleeping accommodation. Goods from China carry 10% or 16% duty across the heading. The selected large diesel and diesel-electric hybrid lines carry 16%; electric-only vehicles carry 10%. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is listed.
The tariff attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls, plus waste import controls on used diesel coaches. Vehicle air-conditioning falls within pre-charged equipment guidance. Imported F-gas equipment must be labelled; ask your broker to confirm refrigerant-specific requirements for China. If a used coach is waste subject to notification, the exporter must apply to the dispatch country's competent authority for consent. Confirm the waste status and applicable controls with your broker before shipment.
The file also lists cultural-object export licensing and waste export measures; ask your broker to distinguish these from import requirements. Confirm propulsion, engine capacity, passenger capacity and new or used condition using the commodity-code guide. For the wider diesel vehicle family, see diesel coaches.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| New diesel-only sleeper coaches, engine capacity over 2,500 cm³ | 8702 10 11 00 | 16% | None |
| Used diesel-only sleeper coaches, engine capacity over 2,500 cm³ | 8702 10 19 00 | 16% | None |
| Diesel-electric hybrid sleeper coaches, engine capacity over 2,500 cm³ | 8702 20 10 00 | 16% | None |
| Sleeper coaches powered only by an electric motor | 8702 40 00 00 | 10% | None |
Specify berths, travelling positions and approval
Agree a floor plan showing berths, passenger seats, restraints, aisle access, emergency exits and luggage storage. Record whether sleeping accommodation is intended for use while travelling or only when parked. Ask the approval adviser to assess that exact arrangement before accepting the factory proposal; a photograph of a Chinese domestic model does not settle the UK approval route.
Proof of vehicle approval is needed for registration and taxation. Ask for evidence covering the supplied chassis, engine, body and interior configuration. Specify right-hand drive, passenger door position, berth dimensions, ventilation at each berth, privacy curtains, washable mattress covers and toilet servicing arrangements. State the intended service so accessibility requirements can be checked, and agree spare parts and English maintenance documents.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative order for a new diesel sleeper coach; values are illustrative, not a quotation under 8702 10 11 00, invoiced at £100,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £102,500. Duty at 16% is £16,400. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £118,900, so it is £23,780. Import taxes total £40,180; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £16,400 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity and documents: match the vehicle identification number, drivetrain and interior drawings to the order and supplied approval evidence.
Sleeping area: check berth dimensions, frame fixings, mattress fit, access steps and curtain operation; compare travelling positions and restraints with the agreed layout.
Access and ventilation: operate doors and emergency exits, check that curtains and luggage do not obstruct access, and test heating and cooling at each berth.
Arrival condition: compare bodywork, glazing, tyres, underbody, mileage and loose fittings with the dispatch record; photograph damage and test toilet and water systems.

What goes wrong
Approval documents can describe a seated coach while the delivered vehicle has a different sleeping conversion. Resolve that mismatch before shipment. Ask specifically whether the proposed occupied berths are covered by the approval assessment. Poorly placed curtains, narrow access around berths and ventilation that reaches the aisle but leaves sleeping spaces uncomfortable are further reasons to inspect the finished interior.
For used coaches, obtain service history, repair records and underbody photographs alongside a functional inspection. Check water leaks around windows and toilets, loose berth frames and unavailable replacement fittings. A running engine does not settle waste status; confirm the tariff's waste-control requirements before buying a damaged or incomplete coach.

Proof of approval is needed to register and tax an imported vehicle. Settle the applicable route before ordering and check that the evidence covers the supplied sleeping layout.
