Sourcing diesel coaches from China

Diesel-only coaches from China carry 10% to 16% UK duty, depending on engine capacity; new and used coaches over 2,500 cm³ carry 16%. Settle vehicle approval and the intended service before ordering, and check refrigerant controls and any waste status for used vehicles. Cambridge China Bridge sources diesel coaches.

Diesel coach duty depends on engine capacity

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8702 covers vehicles carrying ten or more persons, including the driver. Diesel-only vehicles over 2,500 cm³ carry 16% duty from China; those not exceeding that capacity carry 10%, whether new or used. The supplied diesel lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. The smaller-engine rows are classification alternatives, rather than the usual full-size coach specification.

The tariff attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import control to these lines and waste import control to used vehicles. Pre-charged equipment includes vehicle air-conditioning. Record the refrigerant and charge, and ask your customs broker to confirm the requirements for the shipment from China. Waste shipment controls apply only to waste; confirm any used coach's waste status and applicable requirements with your broker. The data also lists cultural-object and waste export controls; ask the broker to distinguish these from import measures.

Confirm engine capacity, diesel-only propulsion and new or used condition through finding your commodity code. For the wider heading, see diesel minibuses. For electric minibus sourcing, see our electric minibus sourcing guide. For articulated models, see our diesel articulated bus sourcing guide.

Specify the coach around its intended service

Agree the seating plan, luggage capacity, steering position, passenger-door layout, engine and gearbox, emissions evidence, heating and air-conditioning. Request drawings showing seat spacing, luggage access and emergency exits. Put the agreed component identities and substitutions procedure in the purchase specification, alongside diagnostic access, workshop information and spare-parts support. For sleeping layouts, see our sleeper coach sourcing guide.

Settle the vehicle approval route with the manufacturer before ordering. Confirm with the relevant authority whether the Public Service Vehicles Accessibility Regulations 2000 apply to the coach and its intended local or scheduled service in Great Britain, including any exemptions. Specify the intended service and check the applicable wheelchair space, lift or ramp, handrails and destination display against the approved design.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A single used diesel coach for a small operator, illustrative values under 8702 10 19 00, invoiced at £100,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £102,500. Duty at 16% is £16,400. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £118,900, so it is £23,780. Import taxes total £40,180; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £16,400 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity and documents: match each vehicle's identification number, engine details, seating layout and installed equipment to the order and approval documents.

Running gear: have a qualified inspector check cold starting, diagnostic faults, brakes, steering, suspension and fluid leaks; compare arrival condition with the factory record.

Passenger access: operate doors, emergency exits and any wheelchair lift or ramp; check seats, belts, handrails, luggage doors and interior fittings against the agreed specification.

Climate and bodywork: test heating and air-conditioning, record refrigerant details, and inspect glazing seals, roof joints, corrosion and shipping damage.

What goes wrong

A coach can match the catalogue while differing from the approved configuration: substituted seats, altered doors or a changed engine leave the buyer with documents that do not describe the delivered vehicle. Resolve approval and accessibility details before production, then inspect the actual build. Permanent imports must be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.

On used coaches, treat missing service records, concealed corrosion, fluid leaks and unresolved diagnostic faults as acceptance issues. Agree how defects will be recorded and corrected before release. Confirm waste status before shipping, and retain photographs and running-test records for comparison on arrival.
