Sourcing sheet metal roll forming lines from China

Sheet metal roll forming lines from China under heading 8462 carry 0% UK duty across the relevant tariff lines. Machinery supplied in Great Britain must meet machinery safety requirements, with conformity assessment covering the complete integrated line where applicable. Duty and classification for roll forming lines

Heading 8462 covers metalworking machines including equipment that bends, forms, straightens and cuts flat metal. This guide concerns lines that progressively form sheet or coil into profiles. The table lists roll forming and neighbouring profile-forming categories for classification checks; it does not mean every line can use any listed code.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Give your broker the process description, control method and full equipment list to confirm the commodity code. For related machinery within this heading, see hydraulic plate rolling machines.

Specify the coil, profile and complete line

Send dimensioned profile drawings and specify coil material, strength, thickness range, coating and width. Agree the finished profile tolerances, cut-length tolerance, hole positions and acceptable surface marks. Define the decoiler capacity, feeding arrangement, tooling change method, cut-off system and discharge support.

Ask for a continuous trial using your intended material, including starts, stops and profile changes. Agree the electrical supply, foundation layout, coil-loading method, controller language, parameter access, software backups and spare rollers, bearings and cutting blades.

For supply in Great Britain, machinery must meet essential health and safety requirements, undergo the relevant conformity assessment, have a declaration of conformity and carry the relevant conformity marking. Where modules form an integrated assembly, the person assembling the line is responsible for compliance of the assembly as a whole. Agree who takes that role and use testing and certification support to review the evidence.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Two compact sheet metal roll forming lines, illustrative only under 8462 25 00 00, invoiced at £56,000 free on board, with £4,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £60,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £60,500, so it is £12,100. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Profile: measure flange dimensions, angles, straightness and twist along trial pieces; check mating parts and coating damage.

Feed and cut: check coil tracking, roller alignment, cut-length repeatability, hole registration and cut-edge burrs during continuous running.

Safety: have a competent person check access to roller nip points, decoiler movement and the cut-off area, then test guards, interlocks and emergency stops under an agreed procedure.

Arrival: compare serial plates and supplied modules with the packing list and conformity documents; inspect shafts, tooling and cabinets for transit damage, corrosion and loose connections.

What goes wrong

A line demonstrated on softer or thinner coil may twist profiles, open seams or overload the drive on your material. Misaligned rollers can scratch coatings, while feed slip and poorly timed cutting can produce inconsistent lengths. Make acceptance depend on measured output from your agreed coil specification.

Separate documents for the decoiler, former and cutter can leave responsibility for the integrated line unclear. HSE says the assembly manufacturer's risk assessment must cover component suitability and hazards at their interfaces. Resolve this before dispatch, and retain trial records for comparison after installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on sheet metal roll forming lines from China?

The relevant heading 8462 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff record, read on 30 September 2026, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Which commodity code applies to a roll forming line?

8462 25 00 00 describes numerically controlled roll forming machines. Confirm the actual process, control method and supplied configuration before declaring the line.

Do individual machine certificates cover the whole line?

Do not assume so. Where equipment forms an integrated assembly, its manufacturer is responsible for the assembly's compliance, including hazards at interfaces between modules.

What should I ask the factory to demonstrate?

A continuous run with your specified coil, measured profile dimensions, straightness, cut lengths and hole positions, plus safe stopping, profile changes and controller access.
