Sourcing seven-segment LCD modules from China
Seven-segment LCD modules from China carry 0% UK duty, with or without drivers, under the LCD lines of heading 8524. Distinguish components sold business to business from finished equipment when assessing hazardous-substance rules, and confirm the segment map and drive settings. Cambridge China Bridge sources seven-segment LCD modules.

UK duty on seven-segment LCD modules
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8524 covers flat panel display modules, whether or not incorporating touch-sensitive screens. Seven-segment liquid-crystal modules without drivers or control circuits fall within 8524 11 00 00; the other liquid-crystal module line is 8524 91 00 00. The table repeats these codes for reflective and backlit variants. For the wider heading, see TFT LCD display modules.
Both LCD lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension on either line. It attaches a DCMS Export Licence control. Official guidance concerns exporting cultural objects from Great Britain; ask your customs broker to confirm how the tariff flag and its document waiver apply to your consignment.
Provide the datasheet, assembly drawing and details of any incorporated driver or control circuit when confirming the commodity code. Do not choose the code from the digit layout alone. The UK import duty and VAT guide explains the separate tax calculation.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reflective seven-segment LCD modules without drivers or control circuits | 8524 11 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Reflective seven-segment LCD modules incorporating drivers | 8524 91 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the segment map and drive arrangement
Specify the digit count, decimal points, symbols, glass outline, viewing area and viewing direction. Agree reflective or backlit construction, background appearance, contrast and the intended operating and storage conditions. Supply a drawing showing every segment and its corresponding contact or driver output.
For bare glass, agree the drive waveform, operating voltage, multiplex arrangement and bias with your electronics designer. For driver-equipped modules, specify the driver, interface, connector and start-up behaviour. Approve the display in your actual enclosure and electronics, including the elastomeric connector compression where used.
GOV.UK guidance excludes component parts sold business to business from the scope of the hazardous-substance restriction regulations. Confirm whether you are buying such a component or finished equipment. Request material declarations and supporting reports for the glass assembly, contacts, solder and backlight to support your product assessment; testing and certification can help organise that review.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 2,000 seven-segment LCD modules incorporating drivers under 8524 91 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Segment mapping: activate every segment, decimal point and symbol with the agreed drive settings; compare their positions with the approved drawing.
Readability: check faint segments, ghosting, contrast and viewing direction in the intended enclosure, under both ambient light and any supplied backlight.
Fit and contacts: measure the glass and connector positions; inspect chipped edges, bent pins, contact contamination and uneven elastomeric connector pressure.
Consistency: compare production samples with the approved sample, confirm the driver and connector match the order, and check protective packaging and batch identification. Use the inspection guide to document acceptance checks.

What goes wrong
A replacement can fit the enclosure yet show the wrong decimal point because its segment map differs. Incorrect drive settings can produce ghosting or poor contrast, while the wrong viewing direction makes an otherwise working display difficult to read. Test the production sample with your own electronics before accepting a substitution.
Missing segments can come from damaged contacts or inconsistent connector pressure rather than the glass itself. Uneven backlighting and altered polariser appearance can make repeat batches visibly different. Record the approved construction and test arrangement, and require approval before changes to the glass, driver, connector or backlight.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on seven-segment LCD modules from China?
Both relevant LCD lines, 8524 11 00 00 and 8524 91 00 00, carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff record. Neither lists anti-dumping or countervailing duty.
Which commodity code applies to a module with a driver?
8524 91 00 00 is the other liquid-crystal module line. Bare modules without drivers or control circuits use 8524 11 00 00. Confirm the actual assembly from its datasheet.
Do business-to-business LCD components fall under hazardous-substance rules?
GOV.UK guidance excludes component parts sold business to business from the regulations' scope. Confirm that the item is a component and collect material evidence for your finished-product assessment.
Can I replace a seven-segment LCD with one that has the same dimensions?
Check the segment map, contacts, drive settings, viewing direction and connector pressure as well as dimensions. Approve a sample in your actual electronics and enclosure before changing supplier.
