Sourcing TFT LCD display modules from China

TFT LCD display modules from China attract a flat 0% UK duty across the relevant liquid-crystal lines. The main compliance distinction is between business-to-business components, excluded from the hazardous-substances rules, and products sold as spare parts. Cambridge China Bridge sources TFT LCD display modules.

Duty on TFT LCD display modules

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 18 October 2026, heading 8524 covers flat panel display modules, whether or not incorporating touch-sensitive screens. For TFT LCD modules, the relevant distinction is whether drivers or control circuits are incorporated. The table shows touch and non-touch variants under each liquid-crystal code.

Both relevant codes carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. It attaches a DCMS Export Licence control to both codes. Ask your customs broker to confirm how that attached control should be handled for your import.

Give your broker the module datasheet, circuit description and photographs, rather than just a screen size or sales name. Confirm the classification through finding your commodity code. The phone repair parts guide covers the wider repair-parts context.

Specify the panel, interface and backlight

Specify the active area, outline dimensions, mounting points, resolution, viewing direction, brightness, colour performance and operating conditions. Record the connector manufacturer, pin assignment, supply voltage, signal interface and backlight connections. Identify the driver chip and touch controller where fitted, and approve the module using your actual host board and cable.

Agree whether modules are new, refurbished or recovered from equipment. Name the approved panel and driver sources, retain a working sample and require written approval before substitutions. Define acceptable pixel defects, backlight unevenness and touch behaviour in the purchase specification.

Official guidance excludes component parts sold business to business from the hazardous-substances regulations. Establish whether your intended supply is a component transaction or a spare-part sale before assuming that exclusion applies. Request material and test information for the exact module, including its solder, flexible circuit and coatings.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 2,000 TFT LCD display modules with driver circuits under 8524 91 00 00, invoiced at £40,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £41,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £41,000, so it is £8,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare panel labels, driver markings, connector position and flexible-circuit layout with the approved sample and drawings.

Display: run solid-colour and grey test images; check pixel defects, colour shifts, flicker, light leakage and backlight uniformity.

Integration: fit the module into your enclosure and run it on your host electronics; check start-up, image orientation, touch edges and cable clearance.

Handling: check protective films, glass edges, flexible-circuit bonds and antistatic packaging. Record batch identity and photograph damage before installation; agree the process through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A matching outline does not guarantee a matching interface. A substituted driver, reversed connector or changed pin assignment can leave the display blank or damage it. Thin flexible circuits tear during fitting, while uneven backlights and intermittent bonds may become apparent only after the module warms up.

Put substitution approval, defect criteria and the installed-failure claim process in writing before ordering. For replacement assemblies, inspect components and packaging for unauthorised brand marks: the site's phone repair guide explains the trade mark risk. Test repeat batches against the retained sample rather than accepting a supplier's grade description.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on TFT LCD modules from China?

Both liquid-crystal module codes in the supplied tariff snapshot carry 0% duty, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

Does a touch screen change the commodity code?

Heading 8524 covers modules with or without touch-sensitive screens. For these liquid-crystal lines, check whether drivers or control circuits are incorporated.

Are business-to-business display components covered by hazardous-substances rules?

Official guidance excludes component parts sold business to business. Confirm that your supply is genuinely a component transaction before relying on that exclusion.

What should I send a factory before ordering?

Send the mechanical drawing, connector pin assignment, interface details, backlight requirements and host-board information. Agree a working sample and written defect criteria.
