Sourcing character LCD modules from China

Character LCD modules from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant liquid-crystal lines, with no listed trade remedies. Establish whether you are buying a component for business assembly or a finished product before deciding its compliance scope. Cambridge China Bridge sources character LCD modules.

Duty depends on the module's circuitry

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8524 covers flat panel display modules, whether or not incorporating touch-sensitive screens. For character LCD modules, the relevant liquid-crystal lines distinguish modules without drivers or control circuits from other modules. The table shows product variants sharing these codes. The wider heading is also covered in our seven-segment LCD guide.

Both relevant lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. It attaches a DCMS export-licence entry to both lines. GOV.UK states that importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain has no licensing requirement. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the tariff entry should be treated for your consignment.

Send the broker the circuit diagram, controller details and assembly drawing before confirming the commodity code. A backlight description alone does not establish whether drivers or control circuits are present. Import VAT is separate from duty; see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the character set and controller

Specify character columns and rows, the character set, custom-character support, controller identity, interface, pin assignment and initialisation sequence. Agree supply and logic levels, contrast adjustment, viewing direction, operating temperature range and backlight colour. Record the board outline, mounting holes, viewing window, connector position and overall thickness. Approve the module using your own firmware and enclosure.

For Great Britain, GOV.UK guidance says component parts sold business to business are outside the scope of the hazardous-substance restriction regulations. Its waste-electrical guidance likewise excludes components supplied to a business for building a finished product. Electromagnetic-compatibility guidance says products imported for further manufacture or processing are not considered placed on the market. Record the intended supply route and obtain material and test evidence for your product assessment through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2,000 backlit character LCD modules with drivers; values are illustrative under 8524 91 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Characters and firmware: run the agreed character set, custom symbols and display commands using your firmware. Check for missing dots, substituted characters, incorrect line addressing and unreliable starts after power cycling.

Optics and backlight: compare contrast, viewing direction, colour and illumination with the approved sample. Check for dark areas, light leakage, pressure marks and changes during operation at the agreed temperatures.

Fit and connections: measure the board, mounting holes, window and thickness against the drawing. Check connector orientation, pin assignment, solder joints and the fit inside your enclosure.

Identity and packing: match controller markings and batch identification to the approved specification. Check protective packaging, scratched polariser films and bent pins. Agree the checks before shipment using our inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A visually similar module can contain a different controller or character set. It may light up on the supplier's demonstration board yet show blocks, wrong symbols or missing lines with your firmware. A changed pin assignment or backlight circuit can also turn a replacement batch into a redesign.

Keep an approved sample and the matching firmware test sequence. Require written approval before changes to the controller, glass, polariser, backlight or board. Define acceptable optical variation and test the module inside the finished enclosure, where pressure and viewing angle can expose faults hidden on a bench.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on character LCD modules from China?

Both relevant liquid-crystal lines carry 0% duty: 8524 11 00 00 without drivers or control circuits, and 8524 91 00 00 for other modules. The supplied record lists no trade remedies or suspensions.

Which commodity code covers a character LCD with a controller?

The relevant liquid-crystal line for modules with drivers or control circuits is 8524 91 00 00. Give your broker the circuit and assembly details to confirm classification.

Does every character LCD component fall under the hazardous-substance rules?

GOV.UK guidance excludes component parts sold business to business from those regulations. Record whether the supply is genuinely a component transaction and obtain material evidence for your product assessment.

How do I check that a replacement module is compatible?

Test it with your firmware and enclosure. Compare the controller, character set, initialisation sequence, interface, pin assignment, contrast adjustment and backlight circuit with the approved sample.
