Sourcing coil transporters from China

Self-propelled coil transporters without lifting equipment from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant electric and other vehicle lines. Heading 8709 excludes trucks fitted with lifting or handling equipment. For Great Britain, check machinery conformity documents and loaded braking. Cambridge China Bridge sources coil transporters.

UK duty on coil transporters

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 October 2026, heading 8709 covers self-propelled works trucks without lifting or handling equipment for short-distance goods transport on industrial sites. The relevant electric, other vehicle and parts lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. Battery-powered and cable-powered electric versions share the electric vehicle code.

The tariff attaches an ozone-depleting-substances restriction and, for complete vehicles, fluorinated greenhouse gas and waste import controls. Waste shipment controls apply only to waste. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable requirements and declaration documents for the Chinese shipment, especially any gas-containing equipment or vehicles offered as scrap. The record also includes cultural-goods and waste export entries; ask the broker to distinguish these from import measures.

Confirm the commodity code using drawings, propulsion details, intended use and the loading method. This guide concerns fixed-cradle transporters loaded by separate equipment. A lifting deck or powered load-handling mechanism needs a fresh classification check. Separately imported components need their own classification review. For the wider heading, see tow tractors and platform trucks.

Specify the coil cradle and factory route

Specify the coil mass, outside diameter, width, orientation and contact surfaces. Agree the fixed cradle profile, lining material, retention arrangement and loading clearance with the equipment that places the coil. State whether travel is on rails or the factory floor, then provide route drawings showing bends, gradients, floor joints and stopping positions.

Agree the loaded operating cycle, steering arrangement, braking behaviour, controls and emergency stop. For battery models, specify battery chemistry, capacity, charger and accessible replacement parts. For cable-powered models, agree cable routing and reel travel. For Great Britain, ask the relevant authority or your customs broker to confirm whether UKCA or CE marking, a declaration of conformity, a technical file and an English manual are required for the machinery.

Do not specify ozone-depleting substances in new equipment, except recycled halons for permitted critical uses. Imported fluorinated-gas equipment must be correctly labelled, including equipment supplied empty. Obtain the gas specification for any cooling or fire-suppression system and have your broker confirm the import position before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of battery-electric coil transporters without lifting equipment under 8709 11 90 00, invoiced at £54,000 free on board, with £3,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £57,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £57,200, so it is £11,440. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Cradle: compare dimensions and lining with the approved drawing; check that the intended coil seats securely without damaging its edges or surface.

Loaded travel: test with the agreed representative coil on the intended route conditions; check steering, stopping, parking brake, emergency stop and load movement.

Power and controls: run the agreed operating cycle; check battery performance or cable management, controller temperature, warning devices and protected wiring.

Arrival and documents: inspect frame damage, loose fixings, cradle distortion and transit restraints; match the machine identity to its declaration, English manual and spares list. Use the inspection guide to agree the report.

What goes wrong

A transporter can travel correctly empty yet struggle with a coil. An unsuitable cradle lets the coil move during braking, hard contact marks the outer wrap, and the frame or wheels may not suit the buyer's floor. Compare loaded behaviour with the agreed acceptance criteria before dispatch and repeat the checks after arrival.

Loading arrangements also cause mismatches: the separate crane cannot reach the cradle, the loaded vehicle cannot negotiate a bend, or the cable reel obstructs the route. Freeze the interface drawings and require approval before changing the cradle, drive or controls. Agree replacement linings, wheels and controller support with the factory.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on coil transporters from China?

The relevant electric and other self-propelled works-truck lines carry 0% duty, as do works-truck parts. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Does a coil transporter with a lifting deck use the same code?

Do not assume so. Heading 8709 excludes trucks fitted with lifting or handling equipment. Ask your broker to classify the actual design and functions.

Do coil transporters need CE or UKCA marking?

For Great Britain, ask the relevant authority or your customs broker to confirm whether these works trucks are subject to machinery conformity requirements, including UKCA or CE marking, a declaration of conformity, a technical file and an English manual.

What should I test before accepting a coil transporter?

Check cradle fit, coil retention, loaded braking, steering and the agreed operating cycle. Include your route clearances and loading interface in the acceptance checks.
