0% duty on electric stock chasers

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 October 2026, heading 8709 covers self-propelled works trucks without lifting or handling equipment for short-distance goods transport in factories, warehouses, docks or airports. Ordinary electric stock chasers fall within 8709 11 90 00; qualifying works-truck parts fall within 8709 90 00 00. Both carry 0% duty from China. The supplied snapshot records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The vehicle rows show variants sharing the same code.

The tariff attaches an ozone-depleting-substance entry restriction, fluorinated greenhouse gas import control and waste import control to the vehicle code. For shipments from China, have your customs broker confirm the declarations and requirements for the actual configuration and waste status. Imported fluorinated-gas equipment needs correct labelling. Waste subject to notification controls cannot ship until the competent authorities consent. The snapshot also lists cultural-goods export licensing and waste export controls; confirm their relevance before onward export.

Confirm the commodity code using drawings, photographs and the operating description. A fixed cargo deck differs from a lifting platform: forklifts and pallet stackers belong under 8427. Do not classify separately shipped batteries or chargers as works-truck parts without checking. See the wider tow tractors and platform trucks guide.

Specify the deck, driving position and warehouse route

Define a stock chaser as a warehouse goods carrier with a fixed cargo deck and an operator position. Specify deck dimensions and payload, load restraint points, operator access, overall width, turning clearance, floor gradients and tyre material. If towing is needed, agree coupling geometry, trailer compatibility and towing capacity separately from deck payload.

Specify battery chemistry, voltage, capacity, usable shift duty, charging arrangements and access for battery replacement. Agree loaded braking performance, parking-brake holding, speed control and replacement parts. Ask for a trial following your actual stop-start picking route, including tight turns and ramps.

For Great Britain, ask the relevant product safety authority to confirm the works trucks' applicable machinery safety requirements, including marking, a declaration of conformity, a technical file and English instructions. Confirm which electrical equipment safety rules apply to the battery chargers. Request documents identifying the actual truck and charger models, with support from testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 12 electric stock chasers, illustrative order under 8709 11 90 00, invoiced at £54,000 free on board, with £3,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £57,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £57,200, so it is £11,440. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Load and access: compare deck dimensions and payload markings with the order; check load restraints, operator footholds, grip surfaces and clearance when turning with cargo.

Drive and brakes: test empty and loaded travel, steering, service braking, parking-brake holding, speed limiting, horn, emergency stop and the key or access control.

Battery and charger: compare battery identification and charger output with the approved specification; inspect cable protection, connectors and secure mounting, then record performance during the agreed route trial.

Documents and arrival: match serial numbers, model plates, conformity documents and English instructions; photograph transit damage, loose fixings and battery condition before commissioning. Use an agreed inspection checklist.

What goes wrong

A truck can meet the advertised payload yet be awkward in the buyer's aisles. Deck overhang, cargo movement and the operator's position can restrict visibility or turning clearance. Check a loaded sample against your route rather than accepting an unloaded demonstration.

Weak batteries shorten working duty, repeated acceleration exposes controller overheating, and brakes that seem adequate empty can struggle when loaded. Lock the battery and controller specification to the approved sample, agree replacement components and obtain wiring information before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on electric stock chasers from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot shows 0% for ordinary electric works trucks under 8709 11 90 00 and qualifying parts under 8709 90 00 00, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Does a stock chaser need CE or UKCA marking?

For Great Britain, confirm the works trucks' marking, declaration of conformity and English instruction requirements with the relevant product safety authority. Check that the documents identify the supplied model.

Can I use an electric stock chaser on public roads?

Before any public-road use, confirm registration and any applicable road vehicle approval requirements with DVLA and the Vehicle Certification Agency. Do not assume the supplied works truck is ready for road use; specify the intended private-site use before ordering.

What should I test before accepting a stock chaser?

Run the agreed picking route with cargo. Check turning clearance, visibility, load restraint, braking, parking-brake holding and battery performance through repeated stops and starts.
