Sourcing pedestrian electric tow tugs from China

Pedestrian electric tow tugs and their qualifying parts from China carry 0% UK duty. For supply in Great Britain, confirm with the relevant authority which marking, declaration of conformity and manual requirements apply to complete tugs. Specify the trolley coupling and test braking with the intended load. Cambridge China Bridge sources pedestrian electric tow tugs.

UK duty on pedestrian electric tow tugs

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 October 2026, heading 8709 covers self-propelled works trucks without lifting or handling equipment for short-distance goods transport, and their parts. The relevant electrical vehicle and parts lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension recorded. The table shows coupling variants sharing the electrical vehicle code, plus qualifying parts.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches an ozone-depleting-substance restriction to both relevant codes. The electrical vehicle code also carries fluorinated greenhouse gas and waste import controls. Both codes list a cultural-object export licence control; the vehicle code also lists waste export control. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable declarations for imports from China and distinguish the listed export controls from your import movement.

Confirm the commodity code using the tug's function, photographs and coupling arrangement, particularly if an attachment lifts or handles a load. Separately supplied batteries, chargers and components need their own classification check. See the tow tractors and platform trucks guide for the wider heading.

Specify the tug against your trolley and route

Send the factory drawings of the trolley drawbar, coupling height and available clearance. Specify the total towed load, trolley wheel type, floor surface, gradients, turning space and working cycle. Agree drawbar pull, travel speed, battery chemistry and capacity, charger, parking brake and replacement parts. Ask for a demonstration using the intended trolley and route conditions, including starting on a gradient and controlled stopping.

For supply in Great Britain, confirm with the relevant authority which machinery marking, declaration of conformity, technical file and English manual requirements apply to these tugs, and which electrical safety rules apply to the supplied battery charger. Check the actual supplied model and charger against the documents before dispatch. Arrange testing and certification checks around that configuration.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 12 pedestrian electric tow tugs; FOB value and freight are illustrative. under 8709 11 90 00, invoiced at £54,000 free on board, with £3,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £57,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £57,200, so it is £11,440. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Coupling: check fit against the approved trolley drawing, locking security, articulation and clearance through turns; inspect the drawbar and mounting welds.

Drive and brakes: test starting, turning and stopping with the agreed load; check parking hold on the intended gradient, speed control, emergency stop and any fitted operator protection switch.

Battery and charger: check the supplied battery specification, charging operation, connector fit, cable protection and performance through the agreed working cycle.

Documents and arrival: match model identification to the declaration and English manual; inspect transit damage, loose fittings and the spare-parts list. Record results using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A quoted towing capacity can hide conditions that differ from your site. Small trolley wheels, rough joints and gradients can expose poor traction or weak braking. A coupling may fit while stationary but foul the trolley during a turn. Battery shortfalls and controller overheating can interrupt a shift. Agree loaded acceptance tests and access to replacement controllers, brake parts and couplings before ordering.

For the tariff controls, obtain the factory's substance and condition information. Imports of ozone-depleting substances into Great Britain require a licence; ask your broker how the attached restriction applies to the tug. Any fitted fluorinated-gas equipment must comply with product bans. Waste controls apply where goods are waste; for shipments to England under notification controls, consent from the Environment Agency and other competent authorities is required before shipping. Confirm the route before buying used or damaged tugs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on pedestrian electric tow tugs from China?

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty under 8709 11 90 00 and 0% for qualifying parts under 8709 90 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded.

Do pedestrian electric tow tugs need CE or UKCA marking?

For supply in Great Britain, confirm with the relevant authority which machinery marking, declaration of conformity and English manual requirements apply to complete tugs. Check documents against the actual model.

How do I check a Chinese tug's towing capacity?

Test with your trolley, intended load, wheel type, floor and gradients. Check starting traction, controlled stopping and parking hold, then repeat through the agreed working cycle.

Will the tug fit our existing trolleys?

Provide drawbar drawings, coupling height and clearance details. Approve the coupling design and test locking, turning articulation and release with a representative trolley before ordering.
