Sourcing self-adhesive polyimide tape from China

Self-adhesive polyimide tape from China normally carries 6% UK duty; conditional relief can reach 0% for qualifying authorised use. Check applicable UK REACH restrictions on the backing and adhesive, and validate heat exposure and clean removal on your actual substrate. Cambridge China Bridge sources self-adhesive polyimide tape.

Polyimide tape duty and conditional relief

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 October 2026, heading 3919 covers self-adhesive plastic flat shapes, including tape. The relevant residual lines carry 6% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. The table shows candidate routes by width, coating and supplied form; its repeated code covers different forms within the same commodity line.

The snapshot lists 0% suspensions on the residual lines for specified materials, not a general polyimide exemption. The narrow-roll footnote names polytetrafluoroethylene and polyethylene; the wider-form footnote names polyolefin tape and co-extruded film but is truncated. The wider residual line also lists 0% authorised-use relief for manufacturing offshore wind turbine rotor blades. Ask your broker to check the complete conditions before claiming relief; HMRC limits authorised-use relief to qualifying specific purposes.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases to these candidate lines. The supplied control text is incomplete, so the importer should confirm the requirement with their customs broker for goods from China. Supply the backing composition, adhesive chemistry, width and roll or cut form to confirm the commodity code. For other tapes, see the wider adhesive tape guide.

Specify the polyimide backing and heat cycle

Specify genuine polyimide backing, backing thickness separately from total coated thickness, silicone or acrylic adhesive, coated sides, width, roll length, core and any release liner. Describe whether the tape masks soldering work, protects parts during coating or remains as insulation. Agree storage conditions, batch identification and acceptance tests against an approved sample.

Describe the actual heat cycle, exposure duration, substrate, surface preparation and removal conditions. Test adhesion, shrinkage, edge lift and residue after that cycle. For permanent insulation, request dielectric performance evidence for the supplied construction and test it in the intended assembly.

Check the backing and adhesive against applicable UK REACH restrictions, which address chemicals in articles as well as substances and mixtures. Ask for composition information tied to the supplied grade. If supplied as a consumer product in Great Britain, it must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Keep intended-use limitations and supporting test results with the product records.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 200 rolls of self-adhesive polyimide tape under 3919 10 80 90, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,200. Duty at 6% is £192. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,392, so it is £678.40. Import taxes total £870.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £192 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure sampled roll length, width, backing thickness and total thickness against the purchase specification.

Heat and removal: apply samples to the intended substrate, run the agreed heat cycle and check shrinkage, edge lift, tearing and adhesive residue.

Film and winding: inspect for pinholes, wrinkles, edge damage, telescoping, crushed cores and uneven adhesive coverage.

Batch identity: match carton and roll labels to the approved construction and batch test records; retain arrival samples. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A heat-resistant backing does not establish the performance of its adhesive. Tape can lift during heating, leave residue after cooling or tear during removal. A room-temperature peel test can miss these failures. Compare production samples with the approved roll using the actual process and removal sequence.

Short rolls, thin backing and uneven coating can hide behind similar-looking amber film. Keep thickness and length checks separate from appearance checks, and do not accept an insulation claim based only on colour or the supplier's generic datasheet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on polyimide tape from China?

The relevant residual lines carry 6% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot. Conditional authorised-use relief on the wider residual line can reach 0%; ordinary polyimide tape is not generally suspended.

Which commodity code covers self-adhesive polyimide tape?

Candidate routes include 3919 10 80 90 for other narrow rolls, 3919 10 19 90 for qualifying rubber-coated strips and 3919 90 80 99 for other wider rolls or flat shapes. Confirm the construction with your broker.

How do I check a supplier's heat resistance claim?

Test the supplied tape on your actual substrate through the agreed heat cycle. Check edge lift and shrinkage during exposure, then tearing and residue under the intended removal conditions.

Should I choose silicone or acrylic adhesive?

Choose through application trials. Specify the substrate, heat cycle, required holding strength and clean-removal conditions, then compare samples. The backing material alone does not determine adhesive performance.
