Sourcing self-adhesive PTFE tape from China
Self-adhesive PTFE tape from China carries 6% UK duty, with conditional suspensions to 0% on some lines. Match the backing, adhesive, dimensions and elongation to the exact tariff description before claiming relief. Check adhesive performance separately from film heat resistance. Cambridge China Bridge sources self-adhesive PTFE tape.

6% duty, with conditional suspensions
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3919 covers self-adhesive plastic plates, sheets, film, foil, tape, strip and other flat shapes. This guide concerns PTFE film tape with an adhesive layer. Confirm the construction before using these rows for glass-fabric-backed tape or non-adhesive thread-sealing tape.
The selected lines carry 6% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. A 0% suspension under 3919 90 80 48 covers the specified PTFE film. Under 3919 10 80 90, the PTFE suspension describes film at least 100 µm thick, elongation no more than 100%, and a pressure-sensitive silicon adhesive. The suspension excludes mixtures, preparations and products made from different components containing the listed products. Under 3919 90 80 99, authorised-use relief concerns offshore wind-turbine rotor-blade manufacture; other listed-product relief is not a general PTFE exemption.
The selected lines attach an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases. Official guidance requires labelling for products containing regulated fluorinated gas, but does not establish the declaration requirement for this tape. Confirm the control and required documents with your customs broker. Confirm the commodity code using the full construction and dimensions. For the wider heading, see self-adhesive polyimide tape.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Specified silicone-adhesive PTFE film in rolls up to 20 cm wide | 3919 10 80 78 | 6% | None |
| Other self-adhesive PTFE film in rolls up to 20 cm wide | 3919 10 80 90 | 6% | None |
| Specified silicone-adhesive PTFE film in wider rolls or other flat forms | 3919 90 80 48 | 6% | None |
| Other self-adhesive PTFE film in wider rolls or other flat forms | 3919 90 80 99 | 6% | None |
Specify the film and adhesive separately
Specify solid PTFE film or a reinforced construction, backing thickness, adhesive chemistry and thickness, roll width, usable length, liner and core. Record elongation and the supplier's test method when classification depends on them. Ask for separate operating-temperature claims for the backing and adhesive, with test conditions.
Approve a sample on the actual machine surface. Agree heat exposure, dwell time, repeated heating, peel strength, residue after removal and release performance against the material being processed. Ask for composition information covering the adhesive and additives. For food-contact applications, request evidence covering the finished tape and intended conditions of use.
If selling the tape as a consumer product, demonstrate compliance with the relevant product safety regulations before sale. Keep the assessment tied to the intended use, including any heat-resistance claims.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 3,000 rolls of self-adhesive PTFE film tape, illustrative order under 3919 10 80 78, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £19,500. Duty at 6% is £1,170. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,670, so it is £4,134. Import taxes total £5,304; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,170 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Dimensions: measure sampled rolls for usable length and width, then check backing and adhesive thickness separately against the approved specification.
Adhesion: apply samples to the intended substrate and compare initial grip, adhesion after heat exposure and residue after removal with the approved sample.
Surface: check for pinholes, creases, contamination, uneven adhesive coating and damaged slit edges; trial release performance with the actual process material.
Packing: check winding alignment, crushed cores, liner release and batch identification on arrival. Retain labelled samples and compare them with the inspection brief.

What goes wrong
A film heat-resistance claim can conceal an adhesive that lifts, creeps or leaves residue under the buyer's operating conditions. Thin backing, short rolls and uneven coating can also undermine an approved sample. Test the finished tape through the intended heating and removal cycle before accepting the batch.
A supplier's description of PTFE tape does not establish eligibility for a duty suspension. Missing elongation data or an unclear adhesive specification can leave the claim unsupported. Keep the construction report with the order and ask the broker to assess the exact suspension wording.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on self-adhesive PTFE tape from China?
The selected lines carry 6% duty. Some have conditional suspensions to 0%; the exact product description and any authorised-use conditions determine eligibility. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded.
Is self-adhesive PTFE tape the same as thread-sealing tape?
Specify whether there is an adhesive layer. This guide covers self-adhesive film tape; confirm classification separately for non-adhesive thread-sealing tape and glass-fabric-backed products.
How should I check a heat-resistance claim?
Request separate backing and adhesive data. Trial the finished tape on the intended surface through the actual heating cycle, checking lifting, creep, release performance and removal residue.
Does the fluorinated gas control apply to my tape?
The tariff attaches the control to these lines. The available guidance does not settle the declaration requirement for this tape. Give your broker the composition report and confirm the required documents before shipment.
