Sourcing floor marking tape from China

Self-adhesive plastic floor marking tape from China normally carries 6% UK duty across the relevant ordinary tape lines. Classify it by backing, adhesive and roll width, and check applicable chemical restrictions before sale. Trial adhesion and wear on the intended floor. Cambridge China Bridge sources self-adhesive floor marking tape.

Floor marking tape duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 October 2026, heading 3919 covers self-adhesive plastic plates, sheets, film, foil, tape, strip and other flat shapes. The rows below are possible classifications for floor marking tape, depending on backing, adhesive and presentation. For the wider product family, see packing tape and adhesive tapes.

The selected lines carry 6% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Some have suspensions to 0% for narrowly specified products or authorised wind-turbine use; ordinary floor marking use does not itself establish eligibility. The supplied suspension descriptions on the residual lines are incomplete, so confirm eligibility before claiming relief.

The tariff attaches a fluorinated greenhouse gas import control to the other-plastics rubber-coated line and the residual tape lines. Products containing banned fluorinated gases cannot be placed on the Great Britain market. The guidance does not settle the declaration requirement for ordinary tape from China: confirm it with your customs broker. Use the material specification and roll width to confirm the commodity code.

Specify the floor, traffic and adhesive

Specify backing material, adhesive type, total thickness, width, usable roll length, colour and stripe pattern. Identify the floor finish, cleaning chemicals, wet conditions and whether traffic includes pedestrians, pallet trucks or forklifts. Agree how the sample will be applied, cleaned, worn and removed, including acceptable edge lifting and adhesive residue.

Check the backing, adhesive and pigments against applicable UK REACH restrictions, which can limit, ban or condition substances placed on the market. Request composition information and relevant test evidence for the supplied formulation. HSE guidance also states that safety signs are not a substitute for other methods of controlling risk; agree the marking layout with the site operator.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 3,000 rolls of self-adhesive floor marking tape under 3919 10 12 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,500. Duty at 6% is £270. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,770, so it is £954. Import taxes total £1,224; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £270 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: unwind sampled rolls to measure usable length; check width and thickness against the approved specification.

Adhesion: apply samples to the intended cleaned floor and check edge lifting, movement under turning wheels and residue after removal.

Surface and colour: compare colour and stripe pattern with the approved sample; check abrasion, cleaning resistance and grip in the intended wet or dry conditions.

Winding and packing: check crushed cores, uneven winding, edge damage and adhesive ooze; match carton contents and batch labels to the order.

What goes wrong

Tape can look acceptable on the roll yet lift from dusty concrete or a coated floor. Turning wheels catch exposed edges, cleaning chemicals damage the print, and stretched tape pulls back after application. Trial the approved sample on the actual floor rather than judging adhesion by touch.

Short rolls, thin backing and changed adhesive formulations undermine repeat orders. Keep an approved roll and compare arrival samples before releasing stock. Include floor trials in the inspection brief, especially when the supplier changes the backing or adhesive.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on floor marking tape from China?

The relevant ordinary self-adhesive plastic tape lines carry 6% duty. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded. Any suspension depends on its exact product or authorised-use conditions.

Which commodity code covers self-adhesive floor tape?

The code depends on backing material, adhesive coating, roll width and presentation. Give your broker the full specification rather than relying on the description “floor tape”.

Will floor marking tape stick to painted concrete?

Trial it on the actual coating after the agreed cleaning procedure. Check adhesion after cleaning and wheel traffic, and inspect for coating damage or adhesive residue when removed.

What should I check before selling floor marking tape?

Check applicable UK REACH restrictions for its composition and obtain relevant supporting evidence. Confirm intended floor performance and resolve any tariff fluorinated-gas control with your broker.
