Sourcing school buses from China
School buses from China carry 10% or 16% UK duty, depending on propulsion and engine capacity. Settle the vehicle approval route before ordering: proof of approval is needed for registration and taxation. Check accessibility against the intended school service. Cambridge China Bridge sources school buses.

School bus duty follows the vehicle specification
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8702 covers motor vehicles carrying ten or more persons, including the driver. School use does not identify a separate commodity line. The selected diesel-only and diesel-electric hybrid lines pay 16% above 2,500 cm³ and 10% at or below that capacity. Electric-only vehicles pay 10%. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is listed.
The tariff attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls; official guidance includes vehicles with pre-charged air-conditioning. For imports from China, ask your customs broker to confirm the refrigerant-specific requirements. Used diesel lines also carry waste import controls. If a vehicle is waste subject to notification, dispatch, destination and transit authorities must consent before shipment. The file also lists cultural-object and waste export measures; ask the broker to distinguish these from import requirements.
Confirm total seating, propulsion, engine capacity and new or used condition using the commodity-code guide. For wider diesel vehicle coverage within this heading, see diesel minibuses. For sleeper coach comparisons, see our sleeper coach sourcing guide.

Specify the school route and passenger layout
Agree passenger and escort seating, belt fittings, aisle space, luggage storage, right-hand drive and passenger door position. Obtain drawings showing steps, handrails, emergency exits and any wheelchair space, ramp or lift. For electric buses, specify the school route, loaded operation, heating use, depot charging connection and battery warranty conditions.
Settle the vehicle approval route before ordering and check that the documents cover the supplied chassis, body, propulsion and seating configuration. Proof of approval is needed to register and tax an imported vehicle. Agree operating and maintenance documents in English, diagnostic access and spare parts support.
Check accessibility against the intended service. New buses and coaches carrying more than 22 passengers on local or scheduled services in Great Britain generally fall within the accessibility rules, subject to exemptions. Home-to-school coach exemptions depend on validity conditions; applications closed on 8 September 2026. Ask the operator to verify any exemption covering the actual vehicle before accepting an inaccessible layout.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order for a diesel school bus with wheelchair access; values are illustrative, not a quotation under 8702 10 11 00, invoiced at £100,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £102,500. Duty at 16% is £16,400. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £118,900, so it is £23,780. Import taxes total £40,180; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £16,400 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the vehicle identification number, propulsion, seating plan and approval documents to the order.
Pupil compartment: check seat and belt fittings, step surfaces, handrails, doors and emergency exits; operate any agreed wheelchair equipment.
Route operation: test heating, demisting, lighting and door operation; check cold starting on diesel vehicles and charging on electric vehicles.
Arrival condition: compare bodywork, glazing, tyres, underbody, mileage and loose accessories with the pre-shipment record; photograph damage and check used-vehicle service records.

What goes wrong
A factory's domestic school-bus layout can leave the passenger door on the wrong side for the buyer's route, provide unsuitable belt fittings or crowd the aisle with bags. A seating change or wheelchair conversion can also differ from the approval documents. Resolve these details on drawings before production and inspect the completed vehicle against them.
School use alone is not evidence of an accessibility exemption. Verify the operator's position before accepting the specification. Electric range can disappoint when heating and passenger load differ from the factory test conditions. For a damaged or incomplete used bus, confirm the tariff's waste-control requirement with the customs broker before purchase.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.
