Zero duty on sailing catamarans

Heading 8903 covers pleasure and sports vessels. Non-inflatable sailing catamarans fall within its sailboat lines, with or without an auxiliary motor. The lines distinguish length and, for larger craft, seagoing status. The table covers these alternatives; our sailing dinghies guide provides wider sailing-boat context.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all listed sailboat lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is recorded. The tariff attaches a restriction on entry into free circulation concerning ozone-depleting substances. Obtain the equipment inventory and ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable declaration.

The tariff also attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import control and a DCMS Export Licence entry. Confirm the gas-control requirements with your customs broker for fitted refrigeration or air-conditioning. Official guidance says cultural-interest imports into Great Britain have no licensing requirements; ask the broker to confirm how the export entry applies to your movement. Confirm the commodity code against the boat's length, construction and seagoing status.

Specify the hulls, crossbeams and sailing rig

Specify intended waters and use, hull length, beam, draught, hull material, laminate or moulding specification, lightship weight, payload and crew capacity. Define crossbeam attachments, mast support, standing rigging, sail inventory, rudders, daggerboards and trampoline material. For cruising models, include bridgedeck clearance, steering, drainage, auxiliary propulsion and access for servicing.

For recreational craft with hull lengths from 2.5 m to 24 m, confirm with the relevant authority whether the Recreational Craft Regulations 2017 apply and what UKCA or CE marking, craft identification, builder's plate and owner's-manual requirements apply. Importers must ensure instructions are in English. Request the model-specific declaration of conformity and assessment documents before shipment; use testing and certification support to review the evidence.

Request refrigerant details for every fitted cooling system. Ozone-depleting substances must not be used in new equipment or servicing, except recycled halons for critical uses. Imported fluorinated gas equipment must be correctly labelled, including empty equipment. Have your broker confirm whether the particular installation needs registration, quota authorisation or additional documentation.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: one demonstration sailing catamaran for a dealer under 8903 21 00 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £33,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £33,000, so it is £6,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Hulls and joints: inspect hull surfaces, bulkhead bonds, crossbeam attachments and mast support for cracks, voids or movement; compare dimensions and weight with the agreed specification.

Rig and steering: assemble the boat, check mast alignment and rigging attachments, operate rudders and daggerboards, and inspect trampoline stitching and tensioning points.

Water and systems: arrange a supervised afloat trial, check compartments and deck fittings for leaks, test drainage and steering, and operate any auxiliary propulsion and fitted cooling equipment.

Documents and arrival: match craft identification and builder's plate to the declaration and manual; photograph unloading damage, check loose equipment against the packing list and record discrepancies. Agree the scope using our quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A catamaran can look acceptable while crossbeam sockets, bulkhead bonds or mast support lack the agreed reinforcement. Poor alignment makes rudders bind; mismatched rigging changes mast setup; weak trampoline attachments pull away. Require construction photographs and inspect these areas before they become inaccessible.

Transport can damage bows, hull supports and mast sections. Agree lifting points, cradles and separate protection for the rig. A generic conformity document may describe a different model or load rating, so match the paperwork to the delivered craft rather than accepting a marking alone.
