Zero duty on monohull sailing yachts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8903 covers yachts and other pleasure or sports vessels. Its non-inflatable sailboat lines cover monohull sailing yachts with or without an auxiliary motor. All relevant lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

The tariff attaches a restriction on entry into free circulation concerning ozone-depleting substances and an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases. Obtain the refrigerant specification for fitted refrigeration and air-conditioning, and ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable requirements and declaration documents before shipment. The tariff also lists a cultural-object export licence measure. Official guidance states that importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain has no licensing requirement.

Confirm the commodity code using the yacht's length and whether it falls within the seagoing subdivision, rather than the supplier's model name. The tariff length bands and recreational craft compliance scope are separate checks. For another sailing-vessel family within this heading, see sailing catamarans.

Specify the hull, keel and sailing configuration

Agree hull construction, laminate schedule, ballast material, keel attachment, draught, displacement and the intended sailing conditions. Specify the mast, standing rigging, chainplates, sail inventory, steering arrangement and auxiliary propulsion. Include the deck fittings, through-hull fittings, electrical installation and lifting cradle in the agreed equipment list.

For recreational yachts with hull lengths from 2.5 m to 24 m intended for the Great Britain market, confirm with the relevant product-safety authority which Recreational Craft Regulations apply and what is required for essential-requirement compliance, UKCA or CE marking, a craft identification number, a builder's plate and an owner's manual. Check the stated design category, maximum load and persons against the supporting conformity documents.

New equipment must not use ozone-depleting substances, except recycled halons for critical uses. Imported equipment containing regulated fluorinated gas must be labelled, and empty equipment must also be labelled correctly. For fitted cooling equipment, have the broker confirm whether registration, quota authorisation or other gas-control documents apply to your imports.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A monohull day yacht for a dealer; illustrative order under 8903 21 00 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £33,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £33,000, so it is £6,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Hull and keel: inspect accessible laminate, bulkhead bonding, keel attachment and bilges against the approved drawings; record cracks, voids, water ingress and departures from the specification.

Rig and steering: check mast fittings, chainplates, rigging terminations and rudder alignment; operate steering through its travel and inspect accessible bearings and attachments.

Systems and arrival: operate pumps, propulsion and electrical equipment; inspect hoses, seacocks and cooling-equipment labels. On arrival, compare hull, mast and cradle condition with dispatch photographs.

Identity and documents: match the craft identification number and builder's plate to the yacht's conformity documents and owner's manual. Agree inspection access and acceptance criteria before production; see quality inspection.

What goes wrong

Watch for undocumented changes to laminate, ballast or keel fixings, poorly bonded internal structure, leaking deck fittings and misaligned steering. A yacht that looks finished can still have inaccessible joints or incomplete system testing. Arrange inspection while structural work remains visible and agree a witnessed commissioning and sailing trial.

Paperwork can describe a different hull or equipment configuration from the yacht delivered. Check identifiers, design category and installed equipment together. Specify mast removal, lifting points, cradle support and loose-equipment packing so transport damage can be distinguished from manufacturing defects.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on sailing yachts from China?

The relevant monohull sailboat lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff facts, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension recorded.

Do monohull sailing yachts need CE or UKCA marking?

For recreational yachts with hull lengths from 2.5 m to 24 m, confirm the applicable marking, identification, builder's plate and owner's manual requirements for the Great Britain market with the relevant product-safety authority. Official guidance permits CE-marked recreational craft on that market; confirm whether the UKCA route is appropriate for your yacht.

Does an auxiliary engine change the sailboat tariff line?

The sailboat descriptions expressly cover vessels with or without an auxiliary motor. Confirm the length band and seagoing subdivision for the actual yacht.

What should I check before accepting a yacht from China?

Check hull and keel construction, rig attachments, steering, watertightness and operating systems. Match the yacht's identifiers and installed equipment to its conformity documents, then record arrival damage.
