Sourcing outrigger canoes from China
Rigid paddled outrigger canoes from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant length and weight bands. Canoes designed solely for human propulsion are excluded from the Recreational Craft Regulations, but consumer products must still be safe. Cambridge China Bridge sources outrigger canoes.

Zero duty on rigid paddled outrigger canoes
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8903 covers pleasure and sports vessels, rowing boats and canoes. The rigid paddled outrigger-canoe lines shown carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension recorded. Length and weight distinguish these lines.
The tariff attaches a restriction on entry into free circulation concerning ozone-depleting substances, an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases, and a DCMS export-licence measure. For your China shipment, ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable requirements and declaration evidence. Do not assume every attached measure requires an import licence. Products containing banned fluorinated gases must not be placed on the Great Britain market.
Confirm the commodity code using the complete canoe specification, including propulsion, construction, length and weight. The table concerns rigid paddled designs; have sail-equipped, motor-equipped or inflatable versions checked separately. See the wider rigid canoe guide. Import VAT is normally 20%; the import duty and VAT guide explains the calculation.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rigid paddled outrigger canoes, length up to 7.5 m, weight up to 100 kg | 8903 93 10 00 | 0% | None |
| Rigid paddled outrigger canoes, length up to 7.5 m, weight over 100 kg | 8903 93 90 00 | 0% | None |
| Rigid paddled outrigger canoes, length over 7.5 m, weight up to 100 kg | 8903 99 10 00 | 0% | None |
| Rigid paddled outrigger canoes, length over 7.5 m, weight over 100 kg | 8903 99 99 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the hull, float and connecting arms
Specify intended waters, crew arrangement, payload, hull material, reinforcement, finished weight and dimensions. Agree the float's position, connecting-arm geometry, attachment method, rudder arrangement and replacement fittings. Ask for drawings showing the assembled canoe, not just the main hull, and agree buoyancy, joint-load and water-trial acceptance checks before production.
For Great Britain, the Recreational Craft Regulations exclude canoes designed to be propelled solely by human power. Consumer canoes must still be safe under general product safety law. Record whether the design is paddle-only; do not extend that exclusion automatically to a sailing or motor design. Ask for assembly instructions, use limitations and supporting safety test records.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative club fleet of rigid, paddle-only outrigger canoes, each within this line's length and weight limits under 8903 93 10 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £33,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £33,000, so it is £6,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Hull and float: weigh and measure against the approved specification; inspect seams, bonding, reinforcement and hatch seals for cracking, voids and water ingress.
Arms and joints: assemble the supplied float and arms on the actual hull; check alignment, fastening engagement, locking security and movement under the agreed test load.
Water trial: check trim, float immersion, steering and buoyancy with the intended crew and payload under controlled conditions.
Arrival and packing: inspect hull ends and arm sockets before assembly; check that supports avoided point loading and that fittings, instructions and replacement parts match the packing list.

What goes wrong
A hull can match the sample while the assembled canoe performs differently because the float position or arm geometry has changed. Poorly bonded sockets, loose joints and leaking hatches can remain hidden beneath an acceptable surface finish. Approve an assembled sample and keep its drawings and material specification with the order.
Transport supports can damage long hulls or distort connecting arms. Photograph the packing and inspect contact points on arrival before launching. Record defects against the agreed acceptance checks; the quality inspection guide explains how to organise inspection evidence.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on outrigger canoes from China?
The relevant rigid paddled canoe lines carry 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure recorded in the supplied tariff snapshot. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Do outrigger canoes need CE or UKCA marking?
Canoes designed solely for human propulsion are excluded from the Recreational Craft Regulations. Consumer canoes must still be safe. Check a sailing or motor design separately.
Which commodity code covers an outrigger canoe?
For rigid paddled designs, the relevant lines divide by length and weight. Give your broker the complete specification; an inflatable or sailing version needs a separate classification check.
What should I check before accepting delivery?
Inspect hull and float damage, assemble the arms and joints, check fittings and seals, and compare dimensions and weight with the approved sample. Complete the agreed controlled water trial before acceptance.
