UK duty on rigid canoes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8903 covers pleasure and sports vessels, rowing boats and canoes. Rigid canoes fall within its other-vessel categories, divided by length and weight. All the canoe categories shown carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions. Import VAT is normally 20%.

The tariff attaches a restriction on entry into free circulation concerning ozone-depleting substances, a fluorinated greenhouse gas import control and a cultural-goods export licence measure. Importing ozone-depleting substances requires a licence; equipment containing fluorinated gas must comply with product bans. Cultural-goods licensing concerns exports from Great Britain. These pages do not establish canoe-specific customs declarations, so confirm the requirements for your China shipment with your customs broker.

Give your broker the canoe's length, weight, construction and propulsion design to confirm the commodity code. Paddles and trailers are classified separately. For the wider heading, see inflatable boats and kayaks. Use the import duty and VAT guide when preparing the landed-cost calculation.

Specify the hull, flotation and fittings

This guide concerns rigid canoes designed solely for human propulsion. Specify hull material, construction method, length, beam, finished weight, wall thickness or laminate build, intended water conditions and loaded capacity. Agree the seat layout, carrying yoke, gunwales, handles, flotation chambers or blocks, drainage arrangements and included accessories. Ask for test records supporting the proposed load and buoyancy claims.

For solely human-powered canoes, confirm with the relevant product safety authority whether the Recreational Craft Regulations 2017 apply and whether CE or UKCA marking is required under that regime. They must still be safe under general product safety law in Great Britain. Ask for a safety assessment and agree clear operating instructions, load guidance and model identification. Review a design intended for a motor separately before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 24 rigid canoes under 8903 93 10 00, invoiced at £6,500 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,500, so it is £1,900. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Hull: measure dimensions and finished weight against the approved sample; check wall thickness or laminate records, distortion, cracks and sharp edges.

Flotation: check chambers, closures and flotation blocks; witness the agreed loaded and swamped buoyancy checks on samples.

Fittings: load-check seats, yokes, handles and attachment points; inspect fasteners, backing plates and exposed edges.

Packing and information: check hull supports and straps prevent deformation; match the model, agreed load guidance and instructions to the supplied canoe. Plan the checks with our quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A hull can look like the sample while using less material, leaving thin sections around seat mounts or along the bottom. Flotation blocks can be omitted or poorly secured, and carrying handles can pull out. Stacked hulls can arrive distorted where straps or supports concentrate pressure. Record these acceptance points in the purchase specification.

A generic certificate does not establish the performance of the canoe you ordered. Match test records to the hull construction and fittings, and require approval before material substitutions. Use factory verification to check the maker's moulding or laminating process and production records.
