Sourcing rubber variator belts from China
Rubber variable-speed drive belts from China carry 6% UK duty across the ordinary replacement-belt lines. Match the code to the actual profile and outside circumference, and assess UK REACH obligations for the rubber compound before supply in Great Britain. UK duty on rubber variable-speed drive belts
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 4010 covers conveyor or transmission belts of vulcanised rubber. For variable-speed drive belts, choose the transmission-belt line using the actual cross-section, rib construction and outside circumference. The table includes a longitudinally V-ribbed alternative only where that is the belt's actual construction.
The ordinary replacement-belt lines shown carry 6% duty on goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or import controls listed in the supplied tariff facts. Selected longitudinally V-ribbed belts for vehicle manufacture have 0% suspensions elsewhere in this heading. Those descriptions and any authorised-use conditions must be checked before claiming relief; replacement stock does not qualify merely because it fits a vehicle.
Send your broker the drawing, material specification, outside circumference and photographs of the inner surface to confirm the commodity code. A supplier's description of a belt as cogged is insufficient to identify its tariff construction. See the wider conveyor belt and V-belt guide for other products in this heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-V-ribbed endless V-belts, outside circumference over 60 cm to 180 cm | 4010 32 00 00 | 6% | None |
| Non-V-ribbed endless V-belts, outside circumference over 180 cm to 240 cm | 4010 34 00 00 | 6% | None |
| Other rubber transmission belts outside the specified profile and length groups | 4010 39 00 90 | 6% | None |
| V-ribbed endless V-belts, outside circumference over 60 cm to 180 cm, other | 4010 31 00 90 | 6% | None |
Specify the belt for the variable pulley
Identify the machine and pulley arrangement, then agree top width, belt depth, sidewall angle, length measurement method and tolerances against a drawing. Record whether the belt has transverse flexibility cogs, longitudinal ribs or a plain inner surface. Specify the rubber compound, tension-cord material and intended exposure to oil, heat and dust.
Agree a sample trial through the intended pulley travel under the expected load. Check clearance, sidewall contact, slipping, noise and temperature rise. Keep the approved sample and drawing together, and require agreement before changes to the compound, cord or mould.
UK REACH generally applies to substances in articles, and Candidate List inclusion brings supplier obligations. Ask for compound information and assess the applicable duties for supply in Great Britain. Agree any supporting chemical checks through testing and certification, with reports identifying the belt construction and compound supplied.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 240 rubber variable-speed drive belts in agreed sizes, illustrative only under 4010 32 00 00, invoiced at £3,500 free on board, with £150 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,650. Duty at 6% is £219. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,869, so it is £773.80. Import taxes total £992.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £219 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Dimensions: measure width, depth and length using the agreed method, and compare the sidewall profile with the approved drawing.
Construction: check cog or rib geometry, cord position where visible, and sidewalls for exposed cords, cracks, loose fabric or separation.
Running trial: check sample belts on the intended pulley arrangement through its operating travel for slipping, rubbing and unstable tracking.
Batch identity: match belt markings, carton labels and inspection records to the ordered sizes and approved compound; inspect packing for crushing and sharp bends.

What goes wrong
A belt can match the catalogue length yet sit incorrectly in the pulley because its width, depth or sidewall angle differs. Slipping and overheating can follow. Unagreed compound or cord changes can cause stretching, cracking or separation, while poor cog geometry can restrict bending.
A factory may offer a general-purpose belt against a variable-speed application without checking pulley travel. Approve fit and running performance before accepting the production specification. Keep suspect batches separate and compare failures with the retained sample before reordering.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on rubber variable-speed belts from China?
Ordinary replacement-belt lines carry 6% duty, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Selected vehicle-manufacturing V-ribbed lines have conditional 0% suspensions.
Are cogged variable-speed belts classified as V-ribbed belts?
Do not choose a code from the word cogged alone. Provide photographs showing whether the features run across or along the belt, plus its profile and outside circumference, for your broker to confirm.
What should I specify when ordering replacement variator belts?
Specify the machine, pulley arrangement, width, depth, sidewall angle, length method, compound and cord material. Approve a sample through the intended pulley travel under load.
Does UK REACH matter for finished rubber drive belts?
Yes. UK REACH generally covers substances in articles. Obtain compound information and assess the applicable Candidate List supplier obligations for supply in Great Britain.
