Sourcing rubber steam hoses from China

Rubber steam hoses from China pay a flat 2% UK duty under the relevant lines of heading 4009, with no listed trade remedy. Confirm the pressure equipment classification before sale in Great Britain and specify steam conditions, hose construction and matched couplings. Cambridge China Bridge sources rubber steam hoses.

Duty depends on construction and fittings

Heading 4009 covers tubes, pipes and hoses of vulcanised rubber other than hard rubber, with or without fittings. For rubber steam hoses, identify whether the reinforcement is solely metal, solely textile or combined with other materials, and whether fittings are supplied. The table describes construction categories, rather than certifying that every hose in them is suitable for steam.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 October 2026, the relevant steam hose lines carry 2% duty on goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for these lines. The heading's suspension for a specifically described vehicle brake hose does not cover ordinary steam hoses.

Give your broker the construction drawing, reinforcement materials and fitting details to confirm the commodity code. See the wider rubber hose guide for other applications.

Specify the steam service and complete assembly

State whether the service uses saturated or superheated steam, the working pressure and temperature, intermittent or continuous operation, and the cooling and draining routine. Agree bore, wall construction, reinforcement, length, bend radius and cover resistance to the actual surroundings. Ask for steam-service test evidence for the offered compound and construction.

Specify the hose, coupling, seal and attachment method together. Ask the supplier to confirm the complete assembly rating at the intended steam temperature. A pressure report for bare hose or cold water does not establish suitability for the intended steam service.

For Great Britain, official guidance says pressure equipment rules apply above a maximum allowable pressure of 0.5 bar, subject to exclusions. Ask for a documented classification before deciding on conformity assessment and marking. Equipment below the relevant classification limits must follow sound engineering practice, have adequate instructions and must not carry CE or UKCA marking under these rules unless another applicable law requires it.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative batch of metal-reinforced rubber steam hose assemblies under 4009 22 00 90, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £1,260 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,260. Duty at 2% is £85.20. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,345.20, so it is £869.04. Import taxes total £954.24; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £85.20 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Construction: measure bore, outside diameter and length against the order; examine a cut sample for the agreed reinforcement and lining.

Couplings: check fitting identity, seal material and attachment dimensions against the approved assembly drawing; inspect for exposed wire, damaged threads and loose attachments.

Testing: match pressure and steam-service reports to the supplied construction and batch; agree safe assembly testing with the test provider before shipment.

Condition and records: check the lining and cover for cracks, blisters and separation; match batch markings to reports and check that packing respects the agreed bend radius.

What goes wrong

A supplier may offer an air or hot-water hose against a steam enquiry, or quote the hose rating without accounting for the coupling and seal. Steam-service evidence needs to cover the proposed construction and operating conditions. Inspect returned samples for lining damage and separation, and investigate any coupling movement or leakage before accepting the batch.

An unsupported conformity mark can also delay acceptance. Establish the pressure equipment classification and applicable documents before approving artwork. Use testing and certification support to define the evidence needed for the actual assembly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on rubber steam hoses from China?

The relevant reinforced rubber steam hose lines carry 2% duty. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty for these lines.

Can I use a hot-water hose for steam?

Ask for explicit steam-service ratings and test evidence for the actual construction. A hot-water description or cold-water pressure test alone does not establish suitability.

Do rubber steam hoses need CE or UKCA marking?

Confirm classification first. Below the relevant pressure equipment classification limits, sound engineering practice applies and these rules prohibit conformity marking unless another applicable law requires it.

What should I send a Chinese steam hose factory?

Send steam conditions, pressure and temperature, bore, length, reinforcement, bend radius, coupling drawings and seal requirements. Ask for evidence covering the complete assembly.
