Sourcing rubber air hoses from China

Rubber compressed-air hoses from China carry a flat 2% UK duty across the ordinary lines shown here. Check whether pressure equipment safety rules apply before selling in Great Britain, using the intended pressure and hose construction. Cambridge China Bridge sources rubber compressed-air hoses.

Duty depends on construction

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 22 October 2026, heading 4009 covers tubes, pipes and hoses of vulcanised rubber other than hard rubber, with or without fittings. For compressed-air hoses, identify the reinforcement material and whether the imported hose has fittings.

The ordinary compressed-air hose lines shown carry 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for these lines. A suspension elsewhere in the heading concerns a specifically described vehicle brake hose; do not apply it to ordinary compressed-air hoses.

Confirm the construction with the factory and your broker before choosing the commodity code. See the rubber and hydraulic hoses guide for the wider heading.

Specify the air supply and coupling

Specify bore, outside diameter, cut length, reinforcement, working pressure, burst pressure, temperature range and minimum bend radius. Describe compressor oil exposure, outdoor weathering and abrasion from dragging the hose. Agree the rubber compound and request production-batch test evidence rather than a report for a different hose construction.

For assemblies, agree the coupling profile, thread form, fitting material and attachment method. Send a mating connector or an agreed drawing: similar-looking quick couplings can have different sealing and locking geometry. State whether the order is loose hose, fitted lengths or hose intended for a reel.

Pressure equipment safety rules cover equipment and assemblies with maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar. Ask a compliance specialist to confirm how the rules apply to the proposed hose and assembly before sale in Great Britain. Agree the supporting documents through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-business batch of textile-reinforced rubber air hose assemblies under 4009 32 00 90, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £1,260 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,260. Duty at 2% is £85.20. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,345.20, so it is £869.04. Import taxes total £954.24; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £85.20 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Construction: measure bore, outside diameter and length against the purchase specification; cut a sample to check reinforcement and inspect the bore for obstructions.

Pressure evidence: match proof and burst test reports to the hose size, construction and production batch; have agreed testing conducted by a competent test provider.

Connections: compare coupling profiles and threads with the approved sample; check crimp dimensions against the fitting maker's chart and inspect for leakage or movement under the agreed test.

Cover and packing: inspect for cracks, bubbles, exposed reinforcement and flattened coils; check pressure and batch markings against the specification and keep ends capped.

What goes wrong

An undersized bore can restrict air delivery even when the hose meets its pressure rating. A mismatched coupling can leak or fail to lock securely, while an unsuitable crimp can let the fitting pull out. Check the complete assembly against the intended compressor and tool connections.

Poor reinforcement or rubber compounding can cause bulging, cracking or early failure. Tight packing can leave kinks, and unclear batch markings make complaints difficult to trace. Retain an approved assembly and compare the delivered batch with it before releasing stock.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on rubber compressed-air hoses from China?

The ordinary compressed-air hose lines shown carry 2% duty. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty for these lines.

Which commodity code applies to fitted rubber air hoses?

It depends on reinforcement. Textile-only reinforcement with fittings falls under 4009 32 00 90; metal-only reinforcement with fittings falls under 4009 22 00 90. Confirm the actual construction.

What should I specify for compressor air hoses?

Specify bore, length, reinforcement, working and burst pressure, temperature range, oil exposure and bend radius. For fitted hoses, agree coupling profile, thread form and attachment method.

What should I check before selling air hose assemblies?

Confirm whether pressure equipment safety rules apply to the proposed assembly. Match the pressure evidence, coupling fit, crimp dimensions and batch markings to the delivered goods.
