10% duty across road tractor lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, road tractors for semi-trailers within heading 8701 carried 10% duty on goods from China. The supplied lines distinguish propulsion type and, generally, new from used vehicles. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty, or suspension, is recorded for these road tractor lines.

The tariff attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls to several diesel and hybrid lines, and waste import controls to used and other road tractor lines. Ask your customs broker to confirm the requirements for the exact vehicle from China. Waste export controls and cultural-object export licence measures also appear in the supplied data; ask the broker about their relevance to any onward export.

Confirm propulsion, condition and intended function before choosing the commodity code. For rigid goods vehicles, see the diesel flatbed truck guide. Use the UK import duty and VAT guide when preparing the landed-cost calculation.

Specify the tractor unit and its approval route

Write down the axle layout, steering position, wheelbase, intended trailer, coupling height, fifth-wheel specification, braking connections and electrical connections. Specify engine and gearbox for diesel units, and battery capacity, charging connection and diagnostic access for electric units. Agree manuals, spare parts and local servicing arrangements.

Unless exempt, proof of vehicle approval is needed to register and tax an imported vehicle. Individual Vehicle Approval is a route for a single imported lorry or a very small number. Confirm the route and supporting evidence for the exact variant before placing the order.

Pre-charged equipment includes vehicles with air-conditioning. Products containing regulated fluorinated gas must be labelled, and equipment placed on the market must comply with product bans. Obtain the refrigerant identity and charge details; ask your broker to confirm registration, quota, declaration and reporting requirements for your imports into Great Britain.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A new electric road tractor unit for a small haulage business, illustrative only under 8701 24 10 00, invoiced at £180,000 free on board, with £14,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £194,000. Duty at 10% is £19,400. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £213,400, so it is £42,680. Import taxes total £62,080; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £19,400 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the chassis identification, vehicle plate, drivetrain and supplied documents to the ordered variant.

Trailer interface: measure fifth-wheel height and clearance, and check coupling operation, air connections and electrical connections against the intended trailer.

Operation: witness steering, service and parking brake checks, inspect air and fluid leaks, and record dashboard faults. For electric units, check charging operation and the battery diagnostic report.

Arrival condition: photograph chassis damage, corrosion, tyres and cab fittings; compare the arrival record with the pre-shipment inspection. Use the inspection guide to agree the report.

What goes wrong

A factory can supply a different axle, cab or drivetrain variant from the documents presented. Other problems include a coupling height that does not suit the trailer, incompatible connections, air leaks and diagnostic tools unavailable to the buyer. Make the purchase specification and inspection report identify the actual vehicle.

For used units, ask your broker to confirm waste status and the China-to-UK control requirements before shipment. Where notification controls apply, waste cannot move until the dispatch, destination and transit authorities have consented. Keep repair history and condition evidence, and resolve approval questions before paying the balance.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.

What should I check before buying a used tractor unit?

Check chassis identity, repair history, corrosion, braking and coupling condition. Ask your broker to confirm waste status and the import control requirements before shipment.

Will a Chinese tractor unit fit my existing semi-trailer?

Compare fifth-wheel height, coupling specification, cab clearance, braking connections and electrical connections. Put these details in the order and check them on the actual vehicle.
