Sourcing terminal yard tractors from China

The relevant UK tariff lines carry 6% to 10% duty on terminal yard tractors from China, depending on classification. Confirm the model's safety and approval route before ordering, and specify fifth-wheel capacity, trailer connections and loaded manoeuvring tests. Cambridge China Bridge sources terminal yard tractors.

Terminal yard tractor duty depends on classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 8701 covers tractors other than those of heading 8709. This guide concerns terminal yard tractors used to position semi-trailers. The table gives candidate lines for other non-agricultural tractors and road tractors for semi-trailers; it does not classify every yard model. See the wider tractor guide.

For goods from China, the listed other non-agricultural tractor lines carry 6% duty, while the road tractor lines carry 10%. The supplied snapshot records no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions for these lines. A supplier's description of the vehicle as a yard tractor does not settle which line to use.

The tariff attaches waste import controls to several candidate lines and fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls to the diesel road lines. For waste subject to notification controls entering England, shipment requires consent from the Environment Agency and other competent authorities. Imported fluorinated gas equipment requires correct labelling. Ask your broker to confirm applicability and refrigerant paperwork for the Chinese shipment. The snapshot also lists waste export controls and a cultural-object export licence. Confirm the commodity code before shipment.

Specify the fifth wheel and the operating yard

Describe the trailers, loaded trailer mass, fifth-wheel load, coupling height and lift travel. Agree kingpin compatibility, trailer brake connections, electrical connectors, turning clearance, gradients and surface conditions. State whether the tractor will remain within the yard or travel on public roads. For electric models, specify the charging connection, available site supply and a trial using your actual work cycle.

For models within machinery safety rules, the responsible person must compile a technical file available on request and provide information for safe operation. Request the model-specific declaration, conformity marking evidence and operating instructions in English. Agree access to hydraulic seals, brake parts, diagnostic equipment and charging components.

Combustion engines need the applicable non-road emission stage where the non-road engine rules apply; type approval demonstrates compliance with emissions standards. Request engine approval evidence matching the fitted engine. For road-going variants, confirm with the relevant vehicle approval authority whether approval is needed before first registration in Great Britain and whether an exemption applies. Resolve the applicable route before accepting a production model.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative order for a new electric terminal yard tractor, assuming classification as a road tractor for semi-trailers under 8701 24 10 00, invoiced at £180,000 free on board, with £14,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £194,000. Duty at 10% is £19,400. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £213,400, so it is £42,680. Import taxes total £62,080; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £19,400 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Coupling: check fifth-wheel mounting, locking indication, kingpin fit, lift movement and hydraulic leaks against the agreed specification.

Loaded operation: test coupling, manoeuvring, steering, service brakes, parking brake and trailer brake connections with a representative trailer under controlled conditions.

Cab and access: check mirrors or cameras, reversing warnings, steps, handholds, door operation and visibility when approaching the trailer.

Identity and condition: match chassis, engine or battery identification to the documents; inspect tyres, hoses, connectors and transport damage on arrival. Record results using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

An unloaded demonstration can hide weak hydraulic lifting, poor braking and inadequate traction on the buyer's gradients. A fifth wheel can couple successfully yet leave insufficient trailer clearance during a turn. Make acceptance depend on the agreed trailer and operating conditions, with defects recorded before dispatch.

Problems also arise when a yard-only model is bought for road work, the fitted engine differs from its evidence, or the charger cannot connect to the site supply. Check these before ordering. For used tractors, obtain condition and repair records and ask the broker to resolve the tariff's waste-control applicability before shipping.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on terminal yard tractors from China?

The supplied tariff lines carry 6% for other non-agricultural tractors and 10% for road tractors for semi-trailers. Confirm the exact model's classification; the snapshot records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Can a Chinese terminal yard tractor use public roads?

Check the exact variant's approval route before ordering. Ask the relevant vehicle approval authority whether approval is needed before first registration in Great Britain and whether an exemption applies. Ask for evidence covering the supplied vehicle.

What should I specify for the fifth wheel?

Specify load, coupling height, lift travel, kingpin compatibility and trailer clearance. Include trailer brake and electrical connections, then test with a representative loaded trailer.

What should I check on an electric yard tractor?

Check battery identification, charging connection, compatibility with the site supply and performance over your work cycle. Inspect charging cables and connectors, and agree diagnostic access and replacement parts.
