0% duty for agricultural orchard tractors

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 8701 covers tractors other than those of heading 8709. Wheeled agricultural orchard tractors carry 0% duty from China across the engine power bands; track-laying tractors also carry 0%. The relevant lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. See the wider tractors guide.

The selected lines attach waste import controls. If a shipment from China is waste subject to notification controls, the exporter must apply for consent in China, and the relevant authorities must consent before shipment. Confirm waste status and clearance documents with your customs broker. The tariff also lists waste export controls and a DCMS export licence measure.

The smallest wheeled agricultural line also attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls. For cab air-conditioning pre-charged with hydrofluorocarbons, registration and quota authorisations are required when annual imports reach 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. Imported fluorinated gas equipment must be correctly labelled. Ask your broker to confirm the applicable refrigerant documents, and confirm the commodity code using the tractor's design and engine power.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026.

Specify clearance through your orchard

Give the factory your row spacing, lowest branches, headland layout and ground conditions. Specify overall width with the chosen tyres and wheel settings, height with the protective structure in working position, turning space, ground clearance and access for servicing. Ask for drawings of the exact configuration, rather than relying on photographs of a narrow model.

Match linkage geometry, power take-off speed and shaft profile, hydraulic flow, pressure and couplings to your mower, sprayer and trailer. Agree brakes, steering, guarding, manuals and replacement parts. Confirm the applicable non-road engine emissions requirements with the relevant authority. For road registration in Great Britain, establish the approval route or specialist exemption with the manufacturer before ordering; an orchard description alone does not establish an exemption.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative dealer order: 12 wheeled orchard tractors under 8701 93 10 00, invoiced at £180,000 free on board, with £14,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £194,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £194,000, so it is £38,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure the delivered tractor with its supplied tyres, wheel settings, cab and protective structure against the agreed orchard clearance drawing.

Implement fit: check linkage travel, shaft engagement, hydraulic couplings and hose routing with your intended implements; inspect guards and accessible pinch points.

Operation: test steering, brakes, transmission and hydraulics with a competent operator in a controlled area; check for leaks after operation and inspect transport damage on arrival.

Documents: match tractor and engine identities to approval and emissions evidence, protective structure test records, manuals and parts lists. Record checks through the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A tractor can fit between rows yet need more headland space than the orchard provides. A low-looking model may only clear branches with its protective structure folded. Reject a clearance proposal that relies on this operating arrangement, and check the working configuration before accepting the order.

Other failures include an approval document for a different variant, an engine with unsuitable emissions evidence, mismatched implement connections and hydraulic leaks. Agree acceptance checks and parts support before shipment. Keep suspect tractors out of service while the supplier resolves the recorded defects.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on orchard tractors from China?

Wheeled agricultural orchard tractors carry 0% duty across the engine power bands. Track-laying tractors also carry 0%. The relevant lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Are orchard tractors exempt from road approval?

Some specialist tractors are exempt, including certain vineyard and track-laying tractors. Confirm the exact model's position with the manufacturer before planning road registration.

What should I specify for a narrow orchard tractor?

Specify width with the supplied tyres and wheel settings, working height, turning space, ground clearance and implement connections. Check these against your rows, branches and headlands.

Can I import a used orchard tractor from China?

Used agricultural machinery needs an official statement, such as a phytosanitary certificate, confirming cleaning and freedom from soil and plant debris. Confirm the applicable plant health and waste controls before shipping.
