Sourcing retractable fabric awnings from China

Retractable fabric awning canopies from China carry a flat 12% UK duty across the relevant textile lines. Confirm classification of complete assemblies separately. Construction-product conformity requirements depend on scope; powered models also need a machinery assessment. Cambridge China Bridge sources retractable fabric awnings.

Awning textile lines carry 12%

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, heading 6306 covers tarpaulins, awnings and sunblinds, alongside tents, sails and camping goods. Its awning lines distinguish synthetic fibres from other textile materials. The table shows fabric variants sharing these codes, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. See our guide to sourcing inflatable event marquees. For tarpaulin sourcing, see our PVC-coated textile tarpaulin guide.

Both awning lines carry 12% duty on goods from China. The supplied tariff extract records no anti-dumping or countervailing measure, suspension or attached import control for these lines. Suspensions elsewhere in the heading concern field-hospital tents, not awnings.

Confirm the commodity code using the fabric composition and an exact description of what is shipped. Ask your broker to assess complete frame-and-canopy assemblies and separately supplied motors rather than assuming the canopy code applies. See the wider heading guide and import duty and VAT guide.

Canopy, folding arms and mounting specification

Specify overall width, fabric width, projection, mounting arrangement, cassette style and manual or powered operation. Record canopy fibre composition, fabric weight, coating, colour, seam construction and attachment profile. Approve an assembled sample so fabric tension, arm movement and clearance are checked together.

Agree the intended wall substrate, bracket positions, fixing selection, installation instructions and operating restrictions with the installer. Request wind-performance evidence matching the awning size and mounting configuration. Include corrosion finish, replacement fabric compatibility, and motor and controller identification in the purchase specification.

Confirm construction-product scope through testing and certification. For the CE construction-product route, products covered by a harmonised standard require a declaration of performance, subject to applicable derogations. Great Britain continues to accept construction products meeting EU requirements, including CE marking. For powered awnings within machinery scope, compliance includes essential safety requirements, conformity assessment, a declaration of conformity and the relevant marking.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative mixed-colour batch of replacement polyester retractable awning canopies under 6306 12 00 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,800. Duty at 12% is £1,176. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,976, so it is £2,195.20. Import taxes total £3,371.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,176 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Canopy: measure finished dimensions and attachment profiles; compare colour, fabric weight, coating, seams and edge finishing with the approved sample.

Mechanism: extend and retract safely on an installed sample; check arm alignment, fabric tracking, cassette closure, crank operation and powered travel stops.

Mounting and packing: compare brackets and fixings with the agreed installation plan; check component completeness, corrosion finish and transit protection.

Documents: match performance evidence and applicable declarations to the supplied model, size and drive system; check instructions against the actual mounting kit during inspection.

What goes wrong

A canopy can look correct laid flat but wind unevenly on the roller. Incorrect attachment profiles prevent replacement fabric fitting; uneven seams distort tension. Misaligned arms stop the front bar closing squarely, while scratched finishes and loose packing damage long components in transit.

A generic report may describe a different projection, mounting arrangement or motor. Resolve discrepancies before shipment. Keep the approved assembly, drawings, component list and documentary evidence aligned, and ask the installer to review the mounting plan before production.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For own-brand ranges, see sourcing for brands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on retractable fabric awnings from China?

The supplied tariff extract records 12% for synthetic-fibre and other-textile awning lines, with no trade remedy or suspension. Confirm classification separately for complete assemblies.

Can I use the same code for replacement fabric and a complete awning?

Do not assume so. Give your customs broker the canopy composition, frame details, drive system and packing list, and confirm classification for the goods actually shipped.

Do retractable awnings need CE or UKCA marking?

Confirm construction-product scope for the model. Great Britain accepts construction products meeting EU requirements, including CE marking. Powered models within machinery scope also require relevant conformity marking.

What should I check before accepting an awning shipment?

Check canopy fit, arm alignment, retraction, brackets, finish and transit damage. Match performance evidence and applicable declarations to the supplied size, mounting configuration and drive system.
