Sourcing inflatable event marquees from China

Inflatable event marquees classified as textile tents under heading 6306 carry a flat 12% UK duty from China. The hospital-tent suspension does not cover ordinary event marquees. Match the anchoring design to the intended site and obtain blower safety evidence. Cambridge China Bridge sources inflatable event marquees.

A flat 12% for ordinary event marquees

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 6306 covers tents, including temporary canopies, alongside tarpaulins, awnings and other camping goods. Textile inflatable event marquees should be assessed against the tent lines by material and construction. The table also includes separately supplied textile tarpaulins and awnings; these are accessory lines, not alternative descriptions for a complete marquee.

The listed lines carry 12% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no attached import controls in the supplied tariff record. The tent lines have a 0.00 % autonomous suspension restricted to tents for setting up field hospitals, including temporary canopies. Ordinary event marquees do not meet that stated use.

Confirm the commodity code using the fabric composition, coating, construction and contents of the shipment, including any separately supplied blower. See the wider tents guide for the broader product family.

Air chambers, anchoring and blower specification

Specify sealed air chambers or continuous blower operation, usable internal dimensions, doorway positions, removable walls, fabric and coating, seam construction, valves and repair materials. Agree inflation and pressure-retention checks against the supplier's documented operating conditions. Ask for structural evidence supporting the proposed wind limits and anchoring arrangement, rather than accepting a generic outdoor-use claim.

HSE guidance tells event organisers to consider underground services when driving stakes for marquees. Give the supplier the intended ground or hardstanding conditions and agree suitable anchoring options before ordering. Ask for flame-performance reports matching the supplied fabric and coating, and have the intended venue assess their suitability.

For a supplied mains-powered blower, obtain electrical safety evidence for the exact model and check its suitability for the intended location. Where the blower falls within electrical equipment safety rules, the importer must ensure it has instructions in easily understandable English. Specify illustrated inflation, shutdown, deflation and repair instructions for the marquee as well.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 12 inflatable event marquees, illustrative order under 6306 22 00 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,800. Duty at 12% is £1,176. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,976, so it is £2,195.20. Import taxes total £3,371.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,176 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Air system: inflate the finished marquee using the supplied equipment; check valves, chamber joints, leaks and pressure retention against the agreed procedure.

Fabric and assembly: compare material and coating with the approved sample; inspect welded or stitched seams, doorway zips, wall attachments and printed artwork.

Anchoring: check attachment patches, straps, supplied stakes or ballast connections against the approved drawing; confirm the packing list includes the agreed anchoring components.

Blower and packing: match the blower model to its documents; check instructions, hoses, repair kit and storage bags, then inspect for dampness and transit damage on arrival. Arrange inspection before dispatch.

What goes wrong

A marquee can inflate successfully yet lose pressure through a valve or chamber joint. Weak attachment patches can separate under load, wall zips can distort when the structure is inflated, and roof geometry can allow water to collect. Test the complete assembly with its walls and accessories fitted, rather than approving fabric samples alone.

An anchoring kit intended for grass may be unsuitable for a paved venue. A replacement blower can differ from the documented model, and a flame-performance report may describe a different coating. Freeze the approved materials, blower and anchoring drawings in the order, and require approval before substitutions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on inflatable event marquees from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 12% for textile tent lines 6306 22 00 00 and 6306 29 00 00. The field-hospital suspension does not cover ordinary event marquees.

Should I choose sealed chambers or a continuous blower?

Specify the system to suit your operation. For sealed chambers, agree pressure-retention checks; for continuous inflation, agree blower operation and the response to loss of power.

What anchoring information should I give the factory?

Provide the intended ground or hardstanding, layout and exposure. Ask for an anchoring drawing and supporting structural evidence, with the supplied components identified.

What documents should accompany the blower?

Ask for safety evidence matching the exact model. Where electrical equipment safety rules apply, the importer must ensure the blower has instructions in easily understandable English.
