Sourcing replacement hydraulic pistons from China

Replacement hydraulic cylinder pistons from China carry 0% UK duty under the hydraulic parts line; complete hydraulic cylinders carry 2%. Work equipment must be supplied safe, so far as reasonably practicable. Match the piston to the cylinder drawing and seal design. Duty on replacement pistons

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8412 covers other engines and motors and their parts. The relevant line for replacement hydraulic cylinder pistons is 8412 90 40 90, parts of hydraulic power engines and motors. The table shows piston variants under this same tariff line, rather than separate commodity lines.

That line carries 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for it. Complete hydraulic cylinders carry 2%; see the wider guide to hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders.

Confirm the commodity code using the drawing, intended cylinder and exact contents of the shipment. Describe the goods as replacement pistons, and distinguish them from piston rods, loose seal kits and complete cylinders.

Specify the piston and its seal grooves

Provide a controlled drawing showing piston diameter, width, mounting bore or thread, shoulder faces, seal grooves and wear-ring grooves. State tolerances, concentricity, surface finish, material grade, heat treatment and any coating. Identify the cylinder bore and rod attachment; a worn sample alone can conceal the original dimensions.

Specify hydraulic fluid, working pressure, temperature and the intended seal profile and compound. Agree whether seals and wear rings arrive fitted or separately packed. Ask for material records and a dimensional report tied to the batch. For a trial assembly, agree a leakage test in the intended cylinder.

Work equipment must be sold safe, so far as reasonably practicable. Agree the intended application and fitting information with the supplier. UKCA marking can only be applied where legislation specifically requires it; assess the product's function before requesting a marking.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 40 machined replacement hydraulic cylinder pistons, illustrative only under 8412 90 40 90, invoiced at £4,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,000, so it is £1,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure piston diameter, groove width and depth, mounting bore or thread, and shoulder position against the approved drawing. Check concentricity and mating-face finish.

Material and finish: match batch records to the specified material and heat treatment. Check for corrosion, coating damage, sharp groove edges and machining burrs.

Seals and assembly: verify seal profile, compound and orientation. Trial-fit the piston to the intended rod and cylinder, then assess movement and internal leakage using the agreed test.

Cleanliness and identification: check for swarf in grooves and mounting features, protective packing and legible batch identification. Set these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A piston may match the nominal cylinder bore yet have the wrong seal-groove geometry. The seal can be pinched, cut during assembly or left insufficiently supported, allowing internal leakage and cylinder drift. Burrs and poor groove finish damage seals; an incorrect wear-ring arrangement can allow metal contact with the bore.

A mismatched rod thread, shoulder or mounting bore can prevent secure seating. Copying a worn piston can reproduce wear rather than the intended fit. Approve the drawing and trial assembly before production, and keep incoming batches identifiable so an unsuitable batch can be isolated.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on replacement hydraulic cylinder pistons from China?

The supplied tariff data shows 0% under 8412 90 40 90, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm that the shipment consists of hydraulic parts rather than complete cylinders.

Can a factory copy my old hydraulic cylinder piston?

Use the sample alongside an approved drawing. Wear can alter its diameter, grooves and mounting features. Confirm the intended dimensions against the cylinder, rod and seal design.

Should I order replacement pistons with seals fitted?

Either arrangement can work. Specify the seal profile, compound and orientation, and identify who will fit them. Check compatibility with the hydraulic fluid, pressure and temperature.

Do replacement hydraulic pistons need UKCA marking?

UKCA marking can only be applied where legislation specifically requires it. Assess the supplied product and its function; a supplier's generic machinery certificate does not establish the piston's fit or suitability.
