Sourcing PVDF architectural fabric from China
PVDF-coated polyester architectural fabric from China has a standard UK duty of 8% under heading 5903. Confirm the complete coating construction and meet applicable UK REACH restrictions, including phthalate limits where plasticised PVC is used. Cambridge China Bridge sources PVDF-coated polyester architectural fabric.

Standard duty is 8%
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 5903 covers textile fabrics impregnated, coated, covered or laminated with plastics, excluding heading 5902. Every listed line has an 8% standard duty for goods from China. The supplied snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties and no attached import controls.
The table compares coating constructions that need checking against the factory's layer schedule. A PVDF finish alone does not establish which row applies. The listed zero-duty suspensions concern specified polyurethane foam fabric for vehicle roofs and specified acrylic latex foam-backed polyester fabric. They do not provide a general suspension for PVDF architectural fabric.
Send the broker the base fabric specification, coating polymers, layer weights, face description and a sample to confirm the commodity code. Distinguish fabric rolls from finished awnings or tents, which the site's existing guidance places in heading 6306. For the wider PVC fabric family, see PVC-coated polyester tarpaulin fabric.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

| Polyurethane-coated, covered or laminated fabric, other | 5903 20 90 90 | 8% | None |
| Other plastic-coated fabric, with the fabric forming the right side | 5903 90 91 00 | 8% | None |
| Other plastic-coated, covered or laminated fabric | 5903 90 99 00 | 8% | None |
Specify the membrane and its weldable finish
Specify the polyester yarn and weave, base cloth mass, total coated mass, usable width, colour, translucency and coating layer schedule. Ask the factory to identify the PVDF finish separately from the underlying coating and state which faces carry it. Agree tensile strength, tear strength, elongation and coating adhesion against the project designer's specification.
Have the fabricator approve welded seam samples using the proposed fabric and production process. Agree whether the finish needs preparation at seam areas, and compare seam strength and appearance with the approved sample. Request weathering and fire-performance reports for the exact grade, colour and construction. Arrange testing and certification around the project's intended use.
For plasticised PVC constructions, confirm applicable UK REACH phthalate restrictions with HSE before ordering. Request chemical evidence covering that coating. For construction products, official guidance says products outside or partly outside a designated standard may be covered by a technical assessment document. Ask the project adviser to check the appropriate route for this membrane.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 8,000 square metres of PVC-coated polyester architectural fabric with a PVDF finish, subject to classification confirmation under 5903 10 90 00, invoiced at £52,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £56,000. Duty at 8% is £4,480. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £60,480, so it is £12,096. Import taxes total £16,576; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £4,480 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Construction: compare bulk samples with the approved layer schedule; check coated mass, thickness, usable width and the identification of the exposed face.
Strength and seams: test tensile strength, tear strength, coating adhesion and welded seam strength using the agreed methods; include samples prepared by the intended fabricator.
Surface: inspect for pinholes, coating streaks, exposed yarn, shade changes, creases and damaged edges; compare transmitted light where translucency matters.
Traceability: match roll labels and batch records to the test reports, record defects and retain samples. Repeat the agreed arrival checks before cutting, following the inspection guide.

What goes wrong
An attractive surface sample can conceal weak coating adhesion or a finish that is difficult to weld with the fabricator's process. Lower coated mass, variable elongation and weak seams can cause problems during cutting and tensioning. Approve the complete material and seam process together, then check production samples against that approval.
A fire report for a different coating recipe, colour or backing does not establish the purchased grade's performance. Shade variation and roll creases also become conspicuous over a large membrane surface. Keep the project specification, approved sample, reports and roll records together so substitutions can be identified before installation.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on PVDF architectural fabric from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot gives an 8% standard duty under heading 5903, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duties. Its named suspensions do not provide general relief for PVDF architectural fabric.
Does a PVDF finish determine the commodity code?
Ask the broker to assess the complete construction, including the base cloth, underlying coating and exposed face. Use the factory's layer schedule and a sample rather than the product name alone.
How do I check whether the fabric will weld?
Have the intended fabricator make seam samples using the proposed material and production process. Agree surface preparation, seam strength and appearance before approving bulk production.
What fire report should I request for architectural fabric?
Request a report identifying the exact grade, colour, coating construction and tested configuration. Have the project designer confirm that the method and result match the intended application.
