Sourcing acrylic awning fabric from China

Acrylic-coated polyester awning fabric from China normally carries 8% UK duty; the range is 0% to 8% where the specified acrylic latex foam-backed polyester qualifies for suspension. Check UK REACH restrictions on coatings and finishes. Cambridge China Bridge sources acrylic-coated polyester awning fabric.

Ordinary duty and the foam-backing suspension

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 5903 covers textile fabrics impregnated, coated, covered or laminated with plastics. Acrylic-coated polyester roll fabric needs classification by its actual construction. The table includes an impregnated variant and a polyurethane comparison line; neither is an automatic code for an acrylic-coated product. Finished awnings fall under heading 6306. See the wider coated fabrics guide.

The ordinary duty for goods from China is 8%. The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no attached import controls. Under 5903 90 99 00, a 0% suspension covers specified polyester fabric with acrylic latex foam backing: rolls of 45 to 55 m, weight of 216 to 264 g/m² and width of 137 to 140 cm. The listed exclusion for mixtures, preparations or products made up of different components also needs checking; an acrylic coating alone does not establish eligibility.

The separate authorised-use suspension for motor-vehicle roof fabric does not describe ordinary awning cloth. Confirm the commodity code using the fibre composition, coating chemistry, cross-section and sample, including which material forms the right side. Ask your broker to check any suspension against the complete product description before claiming it.

Specify the polyester base and acrylic coating

Specify polyester as the base fibre and acrylic as the coating, rather than ordering simply by the description 'acrylic awning fabric'. Agree weave, usable width, total mass, coating mass, coated face, colour or stripe repeat, roll length and tolerances. Keep a signed sample showing the face, reverse and handle.

Agree water penetration, colourfastness to light, tear strength, coating adhesion and behaviour after repeated folding. Ask for results on the same construction and colour being ordered. Trial the fabric with your stitching, thread and seam treatment, and check how it feeds through the intended awning mechanism.

UK REACH restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on substances. Ask for a restricted-substances statement covering the coating, pigments and finishes, with testing matched to the formulation. Where textile labelling rules apply, the label must show fibre content; describe the polyester base separately from the acrylic coating. Agree any project fire-performance specification before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 8,000 square metres of acrylic-coated polyester awning fabric under 5903 90 91 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,200. Duty at 8% is £1,216. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £16,416, so it is £3,283.20. Import taxes total £4,499.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,216 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Construction: compare bulk samples with the approved base cloth and coating; measure usable width, roll length, total mass and coating consistency.

Surface and shade: unroll fabric to check pinholes, streaks, creases, coating transfer, stripe alignment and colour differences between rolls.

Performance: check water penetration, coating adhesion, tear strength and folding behaviour using the agreed methods; stitch a trial seam and inspect leakage and puckering.

Arrival and records: check for damp packaging, staining and crushed roll cores; match roll identifiers to batch records and test reports. Use the inspection guide to prepare the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A supplier may interpret 'acrylic fabric' as an acrylic-fibre cloth rather than acrylic-coated polyester. Other problems to check include an uneven coating, pinholes, shade variation, peeling at folds and seams that leak despite acceptable results on an unsewn sample. Compare bulk fabric and stitched panels with the signed sample before shipment.

Do not assume that any acrylic-backed fabric qualifies for the duty suspension. A solid coating and a foam backing are different constructions, and the listed dimensions and mass must match. Keep a sample and construction record for the broker rather than relying on the supplier's invoice description.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on acrylic-coated polyester awning fabric from China?

The ordinary duty is 8%. A 0% suspension applies to specified acrylic latex foam-backed polyester under 5903 90 99 00 only when the complete listed description is met.

Is acrylic-coated polyester the same as woven acrylic awning fabric?

No. Here the base cloth is polyester and acrylic is the coating. Woven acrylic fabric uses acrylic fibres. Specify the base fibre and coating separately.

Which tests should I request for awning fabric?

Agree water penetration, light colourfastness, tear strength, coating adhesion and folding tests. Test a stitched panel with the intended thread and seam treatment as well as the unsewn cloth.

Can I use the same commodity code for fabric rolls and finished awnings?

Do not assume so. This guide covers coated roll fabric under heading 5903. Finished awnings fall under heading 6306; confirm classification from the supplied product.
