Sourcing precision and analytical balances from China
Laboratory, analytical and jewellery balances with a sensitivity of 5 cg or better from China pay 0% UK duty on both lines of heading 9016, with no anti-dumping duty. If a balance will be used for trade, pharmacy dispensing, medical or other regulated purposes, it falls under the Non-automatic Weighing Instruments Regulations 2016 and needs the right conformity marking.

0% duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 17 November 2026, heading 9016 covers balances of a sensitivity of 5 cg or better, with or without weights, and their parts and accessories. Both lines carried 0% on goods from China, with no anti-dumping measure.
Less sensitive weighing machines, such as kitchen, parcel and bench scales, are heading 8423, covered in our weighing scales guide; confirm the commodity code.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balances of a sensitivity of 5 cg or better | 9016 00 10 00 | 0% | None |
| Parts and accessories of such balances | 9016 00 90 00 | 0% | None |
When legal metrology applies
The Non-automatic Weighing Instruments Regulations 2016 set requirements for instruments used for commercial transactions, calculating payments, applying laws, weighing patients, making up medicines in a pharmacy, analyses in medical and pharmaceutical laboratories, and pricing goods by weight for sale to the public. A balance for any of those uses must be of an approved type and carry the right conformity and metrology marking.
A balance for general research or teaching falls outside those regulated uses, but it still needs electrical safety and EMC compliance; see our electrical goods guide.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 200 analytical balances with 0.1 mg readability under 9016 00 10 00, invoiced at £40,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £41,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £41,200, so it is £8,240. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Performance: check readability, repeatability, linearity and drift with calibrated test weights.
Calibration: check the internal or external calibration function and the calibration certificate.
Build: check draft shield, levelling, display, interface and packing with transport locks. See our quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong
Balance orders fail on performance, approval and transport. Repeatability is worse than the datasheet, balances sold for trade or pharmacy use lack the required approval, and weighing cells are damaged in transit without transport locks.
Cambridge China Bridge sources laboratory equipment for UK labs and distributors, with test weights checked before shipment. See testing and certification.
