Sourcing polygon turning lathes from China

Polygon turning lathes from China under heading 8458 carry 2% UK duty across the supplied tariff lines. Confirm with the relevant authority the applicable machinery safety requirements, conformity paperwork, marking and English instructions. Specify the polygon profile and prove it by cutting your parts. Cambridge China Bridge sources polygon turning lathes.

Duty and classification for polygon turning lathes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8458 covers lathes, including turning centres, for removing metal. All supplied lines carry 2% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures or suspensions recorded. The table gives possible classifications for polygon turning machines, depending on their construction and control.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases to every supplied line. Ask whether the machine's cooling package contains refrigerant. Imported F-gas equipment must be labelled, including any empty equipment. Confirm the control's applicability, any quota requirement and the customs declaration with your broker for the actual package supplied.

Confirm the commodity code from the machine specification, orientation, numerical control and automatic-lathe or turning-centre configuration. Do not classify it solely from the name 'polygon lathe'. See the wider lathe guide for other machines in this heading.

Specify the polygon profile and synchronised drive

Provide a part drawing, workpiece material, blank dimensions, required number of flats, across-flats dimension, profile tolerance and surface finish. Describe the permitted corner shape and flatness: agree acceptance from measured parts rather than a brochure's claim that the machine produces polygons.

Specify the workpiece and cutter spindle synchronisation, cutter head and insert arrangement, tool adjustment, workholding, bar-feeding options and chip removal. Agree the cutting conditions and measurement method for a factory trial using your material. Include the control version, electrical supply, replacement tooling and a repeat test after installation.

For supply in Great Britain, confirm with the relevant authority the requirements applicable to the lathe under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, including essential health and safety requirements, a declaration of conformity, appropriate marking and English instructions. CE marking remains recognised in Great Britain; check that the documents and marking match the delivered machine.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 6 horizontal numerically controlled automatic polygon lathes, single spindle under 8458 11 41 00, invoiced at £150,000 free on board, with £9,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £159,000. Duty at 2% is £3,180. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £162,180, so it is £32,436. Import taxes total £35,616; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £3,180 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Cut profile: measure across-flats dimensions, flatness, corner shape and surface finish on parts cut from the agreed material, including after the machine has warmed up.

Synchronisation and tooling: check cutter and workpiece spindle run-out, drive backlash, cutter-head seating and repeatability after stopping and restarting the cutting cycle.

Safety and documents: test guards, door interlocks and emergency stops; match the machine identification to the declaration of conformity and check the English operating instructions.

Arrival and installation: inspect spindle restraints, tooling and corrosion protection, then level the machine and repeat the agreed part trial. Use the inspection guide to define what the inspector records.

What goes wrong

A sample can meet the across-flats dimension while its faces are bowed or its corners differ from the drawing. Cutter geometry, spindle synchronisation, backlash and tool wear can change the profile. Approve measured trial parts and record the tooling and settings used.

Shipping damage or poor levelling can change the result after arrival. A substituted control or unavailable cutter inserts can also prevent repeat production. Agree the supplied tooling and control version, retain the factory trial records and repeat the cutting test after installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on polygon turning lathes from China?

The supplied tariff data shows 2% duty throughout heading 8458, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures or suspensions recorded.

Which commodity code covers a polygon turning lathe?

Use the machine's orientation, numerical control and configuration to identify the line. The polygon-turning name alone does not distinguish an automatic lathe from a turning centre or other lathe.

How do I check polygon turning accuracy before shipment?

Run your material at the agreed settings. Measure across-flats dimensions, flatness, corner shape and finish, then repeat after warm-up and a cycle restart.

Does the F-gas control apply to a polygon lathe?

The tariff attaches the control to all supplied lines. Identify any refrigerant-containing cooling equipment and ask your broker to confirm the requirement and declaration for the actual machine.
