UK duty on polyester seatbelt webbing

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 5806 covers narrow woven fabrics and adhesive-assembled warp fabrics. For ordinary non-elastic polyester seatbelt webbing, the relevant supplied lines are 5806 32 10 00 with real selvedges and 5806 32 90 00 for other edge constructions. The table shows dyed and undyed variants under these same commodity lines.

Both lines carry 6% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control on either line. These entries describe the textile material; assess a finished belt separately.

Give your customs broker a sample, fibre composition, weave and edge-construction details to confirm the commodity code. For other applications, see the wider polyester webbing guide. The calculation method is explained in UK import duty and VAT.

Specify webbing for the intended belt assembly

State polyester yarn type, weave, width, thickness, mass per length, edge construction, colour and finish. Agree breaking force, elongation under load, abrasion resistance and conditioning methods with the belt manufacturer. Include roll length, permitted joins, winding direction and batch identification. Keep an approved sample and require written agreement before changing yarn, dye or finish.

Before offering the material for vehicle use, ask a vehicle-approval specialist to confirm the finished belt's approval route and the evidence needed for the proposed webbing. Arrange trials through the intended retractor, guides and stitching process. Ask for test reports tied to the actual construction and production batch through testing and certification.

UK REACH generally applies to substances in articles. Ask the mill for chemical information covering the dyes and finishes, and review applicable restrictions for the intended use. Where textiles come into direct and prolonged skin contact, ask HSE to confirm any applicable azo-colourant restrictions; request colour-specific supporting reports.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 4,000 metres of polyester seatbelt webbing under 5806 32 10 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 6% is £756. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,356, so it is £2,671.20. Import taxes total £3,427.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £756 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Construction: verify polyester composition, weave, width, thickness and selvedges against the agreed specification; examine rolls for uneven edges, broken yarns and concealed joins.

Performance: match breaking-force, elongation and abrasion reports to the batch; retain samples and check feeding, retraction and stitched samples with the intended hardware.

Condition: inspect for cuts, fluffing, fraying and stretched areas. The official vehicle inspection manual specifically assesses these defects in fitted seatbelt webbing.

Traceability: match roll labels, dye lots, inspection records and retained samples; compare shade across rolls and check for colour transfer. Record results through the quality inspection process.

What goes wrong

A sample can look right while bulk production uses different yarn or finishing. Width or thickness variation can cause poor feeding through guides; rough edges can abrade, and inconsistent elongation can undermine the intended assembly performance. Release batches against agreed measurements and test results, rather than appearance alone.

Another mistake is accepting a generic strength report without identifying its sample, construction or batch. Keep the material checks and finished-assembly assessment connected: agree with the belt manufacturer which changes require fresh testing before accepting substitute yarn, dye or finish.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on polyester seatbelt webbing from China?

The relevant lines, 5806 32 10 00 and 5806 32 90 00, carry 6% duty. The supplied tariff facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

Which commodity code covers polyester seatbelt webbing?

For ordinary non-elastic polyester webbing, check 5806 32 10 00 with real selvedges or 5806 32 90 00 for other edge constructions. Confirm from a sample and the manufacturing details.

Is a webbing strength report enough for vehicle use?

Ask the belt manufacturer and a vehicle-approval specialist to confirm the finished assembly's evidence needs. Request reports for the actual webbing construction and batch, plus trials with the intended hardware.

What should I check when seatbelt webbing arrives?

Check dimensions, edge construction, cuts, fraying, joins, shade and batch labels. Compare performance reports with the specification and trial the webbing through the intended guides and retractor.
