UK duty on non-elastic polyester webbing

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 5806 covers narrow woven fabrics and adhesive-assembled warp fabrics. This guide concerns non-elastic woven polyester webbing. The relevant man-made fibre lines distinguish fabrics with real selvedges from other fabrics. The table repeats these lines for bag handles and straps rather than suggesting separate application-specific codes.

Both relevant lines carry 6% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls for either line. These tariff findings do not establish that a finished strap is suitable for its intended use.

Give your customs broker the fibre composition, weave and edge construction, with a physical sample, to confirm the commodity code. For the wider heading, see non-elastic cotton webbing.

Specify the weave, edges and strap performance

Specify polyester composition, weave, width, thickness, weight per metre, edge construction, colour, finish and roll length. Agree tolerances, permitted joins and how joins are marked. Describe the intended bag handle or strap and supply the buckle or adjuster that the webbing must fit. Approve a physical sample for stiffness, grip and edge feel.

For sale in Great Britain, textile labels must show fibre content. UK REACH restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on substances used in products. For webbing intended for direct and prolonged skin contact, check the azo colourant restrictions described in the site's textile guides and request dye test reports matching the ordered colours.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 4,000 metres of non-elastic woven polyester webbing under 5806 32 10 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,400. Duty at 6% is £384. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,784, so it is £1,356.80. Import taxes total £1,740.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £384 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions and fit: measure width and thickness across rolls, then thread samples through the intended buckle and check adjustment and slipping.

Edges and weave: inspect for fraying, loose yarns, missing picks, uneven edges and hard fused areas; compare edge construction with the approved sample.

Colour and finish: compare rolls with the approved colour sample, check rubbing and washing performance against agreed criteria, and look for oily marks or inconsistent stiffness.

Length and performance: check roll length and marked joins, test the agreed breaking strength and elongation, and retain roll identification for quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A sample can fit an adjuster while bulk webbing slips because thickness or finish has changed. Cut edges may fray during sewing, and tightly wound rolls can hide joins, short lengths or shade changes. Check material from within rolls as well as exposed ends.

Do not treat a webbing strength result as proof that an assembled strap will perform. Stitching, folds and hardware affect the finished assembly. Agree an application test using the intended components before approving bulk production.
