Sourcing polypropylene webbing from China

Non-elastic woven polypropylene webbing from China carries 6% UK duty across the relevant heading 5806 lines. Check whether it has real selvedges before choosing the code, and plan fibre-content labelling for retail supply in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources non-elastic woven polypropylene webbing.

UK duty on polypropylene webbing

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 5806 covers narrow woven fabrics and adhesive-assembled warp fabrics. This guide concerns non-elastic woven polypropylene webbing. The relevant man-made-fibre lines distinguish fabrics with real selvedges from other constructions.

Both relevant lines carry 6% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control. The table contains only the relevant polypropylene classifications.

Send a sample, fibre composition and an explanation of how the edges are formed to your customs broker to confirm the commodity code. For the wider heading and an alternative webbing material, see the polyester webbing guide.

Specify the webbing and its finished assembly

Specify polypropylene fibre composition, weave, width and thickness with agreed tolerances, weight per metre, colour, surface feel, edge construction and roll length. State whether joins are acceptable and how they should be marked. Approve a physical sample with the actual buckle, adjuster or sewn attachment.

Define the intended application and agree breaking-strength, extension and seam tests suited to it. Test the finished assembly as well as the loose webbing. For retail supply in Great Britain, textile labelling must show fibre content. Consumer products must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 4,000 metres of non-elastic woven polypropylene webbing under 5806 32 10 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,400. Duty at 6% is £384. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,784, so it is £1,356.80. Import taxes total £1,740.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £384 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material and dimensions: verify fibre composition against the order; measure width, thickness and weight per metre across the sampled rolls.

Edges and weave: check for fraying, broken yarns, uneven weaving and hard or sharp fused edges; compare the edge construction with the approved sample.

Colour and rolls: compare shades between rolls, rub against a light-coloured cloth, check usable roll length and identify concealed joins. Keep roll and batch identification with the inspection record.

Assembly performance: test sliding and locking in the intended buckle, inspect sewn attachments and compare strength and extension results with the agreed specification.

What goes wrong

A webbing sample can look correct yet slip through the buyer's buckle because its thickness, weave or surface finish has changed. Narrow sections jam in the adjuster, coarse edges snag fabric, and concealed joins interrupt cutting. Check production samples in the actual assembly before dispatch and repeat the fit check on arrival.

A breaking-strength result for loose webbing does not establish the performance of its stitching or buckle. Agree assembly tests before ordering, retain the approved sample and separate suspect rolls when shade, dimensions or construction differ.
