Sourcing woven aramid webbing from China
Woven aramid webbing from China carries 6% UK duty across the relevant man-made-fibre lines, with no listed trade remedies. Check applicable UK REACH restrictions on dyes and finishes, and specify fibre type, edge construction and tested performance for the intended use. UK duty on woven aramid webbing
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 5806 covers narrow woven fabrics and adhesive-assembled warp fabrics. For ordinary non-elastic aramid webbing, the relevant man-made-fibre lines distinguish real selvedges from other construction. The table separates para-aramid and meta-aramid purchasing variants within those same tariff lines.
The supplied tariff data shows 6% duty for goods from China across these lines, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or attached import control. Construction containing by weight 5% or more of elastomeric yarn or rubber thread has a separate line, also at 6%. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Ask your broker to confirm the commodity code from a sample, fibre composition and edge photographs before shipment. For the wider narrow-woven-fabric family, see polyester webbing.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Para-aramid woven webbing with real selvedges | 5806 32 10 00 | 6% | None |
| Para-aramid woven webbing, other edge construction | 5806 32 90 00 | 6% | None |
Specify the aramid fibre and working conditions
State para-aramid or meta-aramid, filament or spun yarn, and any blended fibres. Specify width, thickness, mass per metre, weave, real selvedges or cut edges, finish, colour and roll length. Give the factory your intended temperature exposure, loading, abrasion and cleaning conditions, then agree test methods and acceptance criteria.
UK REACH restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on substances used in articles. For dyed webbing intended for direct and prolonged skin contact, check the azo colourant restriction described in our textile reference guides. Ask for reports covering the actual colours and finishes, rather than an unrelated fabric.
If you have finished protective equipment made and market it under your name or trademark, you are its manufacturer. Do not treat a webbing tensile report as proof of the finished assembly's performance. Agree testing of stitching, fittings and the assembled product through testing and certification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 4,000 metres of woven aramid webbing with real selvedges under 5806 32 10 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 6% is £756. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,356, so it is £2,671.20. Import taxes total £3,427.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £756 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Fibre identity: compare batch documentation and independent fibre identification with the approved yarn specification; do not accept colour or a trade name as identification.
Dimensions and edges: measure width, thickness and mass per metre against the agreed tolerances; inspect selvedges, cut edges, broken yarns and local narrowing.
Performance: check batch-linked tensile and elongation results; test heat exposure and abrasion against the agreed application, including sewn joints where relevant.
Rolls and traceability: verify usable length, declared joins, winding and batch labels on arrival; compare samples from different rolls using the agreed inspection plan.

What goes wrong
A quote saying only “aramid webbing” leaves room for a different fibre type, yarn construction or blend. Other failures include fraying cut edges, uneven width, concealed joins and a finish that changes flexibility. Keep an approved sample and require written agreement before any material or process change.
A strong unsewn strip can still fail at a stitched joint or fitting. Test the intended assembly and exposure conditions before approving bulk material. Keep rolls identified by batch and investigate a failed sample before mixing that batch into production.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on aramid webbing from China?
The relevant man-made-fibre lines under heading 5806 carry 6% duty in the supplied tariff data, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension.
Which commodity code covers woven aramid webbing?
For ordinary non-elastic webbing, check 5806 32 10 00 for real selvedges and 5806 32 90 00 for other construction. Give your broker a sample and full fibre composition.
What should I put in an aramid webbing specification?
Specify fibre type and blend, yarn construction, weave, width, thickness, mass per metre, edges and finish. Agree performance tests for the actual loading and exposure conditions.
Does a webbing test report prove a finished harness is suitable?
A strip report does not establish the performance of stitching, fittings or the assembled harness. Ask for testing of the intended assembly and check that reports identify the supplied material.
