Sourcing Poly-V ribbed drive belts from China

Poly-V ribbed drive belts of vulcanised rubber from China normally carry 6% UK duty; qualifying vehicle-manufacturing lines have 0% suspensions. Classification depends on outside circumference and intended use. Match rib geometry and the length measurement system to the drive. Cambridge China Bridge sources Poly-V ribbed drive belts.

Duty on rubber Poly-V belts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 November 2026, heading 4010 covers conveyor or transmission belts of vulcanised rubber. This guide concerns endless Poly-V belts with longitudinal ribs. The relevant lines distinguish outside circumference exceeding 60 cm but not exceeding 180 cm, exceeding 180 cm but not exceeding 240 cm, and other sizes.

The supplied tariff record shows 6% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no attached import controls. Vehicle-manufacturing lines have 0.00 % suspensions: 4010 31 00 10 and 4010 39 00 10 under authorised use, and 4010 33 00 10 under an autonomous tariff suspension. The suspension notes exclude mixtures, preparations or products made up of different components containing these products.

Confirm the material, outside circumference and manufacturing use with your broker before choosing the commodity code or budgeting for a suspension. Keep the supplier's effective-length designation separate from the outside circumference used in the tariff description. See the wider conveyor belt and V-belt guide for other products within the heading.

Specify rib geometry and measured length

Write the rib profile, rib count, width, thickness, cord material and rubber compound into the order. Identify the length measurement system and agree a measuring fixture and tension. Provide pulley drawings, operating speed, load, temperature and exposure to oil or water. Agree dimensional tolerances and acceptance tests against an approved sample.

REACH restrictions cover chemical risks in articles as well as substances and mixtures. Ask the factory for a material declaration and evidence addressing restrictions relevant to the actual belt compound and intended use in Great Britain. A report for another rubber product does not establish the composition of your belt.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 2,000 Poly-V ribbed drive belts under 4010 31 00 90, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £27,500. Duty at 6% is £1,650. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £29,150, so it is £5,830. Import taxes total £7,480; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,650 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: check rib count, rib pitch, width and measured length against the drawing using the agreed fixture.

Construction: inspect rib roots, edges and backing for cracks, missing rubber, exposed cords and separation.

Drive trial: check seating on the intended pulleys, tracking, slip, noise and length change under the agreed operating conditions.

Batch identity: match belt markings, carton labels, material declarations and test reports to the delivered batch. Use a written inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A matching printed length can conceal a different measurement system. The belt then sits outside the tensioner's working range. Incorrect rib geometry can cause poor seating, noise and uneven wear; weak cord adhesion or an unsuitable compound can lead to stretching, cracking or separation.

Approve a sample on the actual drive before accepting bulk production, and retain it for comparison. Avoid treating a vehicle replacement belt as automatically eligible for a vehicle-manufacturing suspension. Ask the broker to check the exact tariff description and suspension conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on Poly-V belts from China?

The supplied tariff record shows a normal rate of 6%, with 0.00 % suspensions on qualifying vehicle-manufacturing lines. It lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures.

Which belt length determines the commodity code?

The tariff descriptions use outside circumference. Ask the factory to confirm that measurement separately from its effective-length or other catalogue designation.

Can I order using only a replacement part number?

Use the part number as a starting point, then confirm rib profile, rib count, length system, compound and pulley fit against a drawing or approved sample.

What should I check when the belts arrive?

Check dimensions, rib and edge condition, batch markings and reports. Trial samples on the intended drive for seating, tracking, slip, noise and length change.
