UK duty on plastic utility sinks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 October 2026, heading 3922 covers plastic sanitary ware. Plastic utility sinks fall within 3922 10 00 00, covering baths, shower-baths, sinks and washbasins. The table shows sink configurations sharing that commodity line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

The supplied tariff data gives 6% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or import control. For the wider product family, see plastic baths, shower trays and toilet seats.

Confirm the material and complete supplied configuration with your customs broker using finding your commodity code. Keep the sink drawing, material specification and list of included fittings together.

Specify the bowl, support and connections

Specify the resin, permitted recycled content, colour, wall thickness at the rim and bowl base, usable bowl dimensions and mounting method. Agree which stand, brackets, fixings, waste assembly and overflow are included. State the intended washing tasks and agree sample checks for the water temperature and cleaning products buyers will use.

Waste outlets, overflow and tap holes should suit the intended UK fittings. Approve a sample with the actual waste and mounting hardware fitted, then fill and drain it. Check access for tightening the waste underneath and whether the support leaves room for the trap.

For sinks intended for or reasonably likely to be used by consumers in Great Britain, general product safety rules apply. Importers must ensure covered products are safe before placing them on that market. Retain the agreed specification and sample test results.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 300 plastic utility sinks under 3922 10 00 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,500. Duty at 6% is £450. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,950, so it is £1,590. Import taxes total £2,040; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £450 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material and moulding: compare resin records and colour with the approved sample; inspect thin corners, voids, sharp edges and distortion around the waste.

Fit and drainage: measure the bowl and mounting points against the drawing; fit the agreed waste and overflow, fill the bowl and check leakage and water left after draining.

Support and rigidity: assemble the supplied stand or brackets; check rocking, fixing access and bowl movement under the agreed use conditions.

Packing and arrival: check rim and corner protection, separation between nested bowls and loose fittings; unpack arrival samples and repeat assembly and leak checks. Use quality inspection explained to brief the inspector.

What goes wrong

A sink can look acceptable empty but flex when filled, disturbing the waste seal. A distorted outlet can leak despite a tight nut, while an uneven bowl base leaves standing water. Missing brackets or an incompatible waste thread can prevent installation.

Approve the assembled sample rather than the bowl alone. Agree checks using the intended cleaners and water conditions, and review packing with the protective materials fitted. Nested bowls need separation so that rims and fittings do not rub against exposed surfaces.
